New 4k monitor, now thinking about next upgrade steps, advice needed

Considering op also uses the monitor for other non gaming reason, absolutely no chance I would consider going down in resolution.

GPU upgrade whenever and then platform upgrade if struggling to hit acceptable fps

for my son too,

£758 doesn't seem too bad between his wallet and mine, probably call my half a christmas present, then see about getting the full 144 hz out of it with a gpu upgrade come black friday, lol
it has great review here too https://www.reddit.com/r/OLED_Gaming/comments/1e4vztf/gigabyte_aurous_fo27q3_oled_27_1440p_360hz/
Nice that. I'm waiting for this sort of thing to come down to 600 quid or thereabouts.

Thanks again for all the replies, it is much appreciated!!

ahh, the old, I upgraded to 4k, now I have to spend a **** ton of money to run it story
This was always the plan, to get monitor first and think about CPU/GPU after. This thread was to help my thinking as which way to jump first. And, no mad hurry, as performance is pretty good even now.
so if he wants very high fps in games, really he should drop down to a 1440, or even 1080p,
No, I am too old to take advantage of very high fps in games.
Each to his or her own, I think I'd rather have a 1440p OLED than a 4k IPS..
I have had an OLED a couple of years ago, an alienware that had a weird fault so it got sent back. What I did learn from the experience. OLEDs are amazing, but I was always worried about burn in/out. Mitigation factors aside, I just did not want that in my mind hence going IPS. I spend a lot longer on office/productivity (got to pay the bills), that this G85NB made more sense for me.

I think OLED has improved somewhat in that time, I bought a 55 inch LG OLED and it's absolutely fantastic. If monitors are now the same quality as my telly, which I've no reason to believe they aren't, then I think it's finally the time when I can take a chance on one. The good ones have burn in protection. Waiting for them to be around 600 quid for a good one and then I'll probably bite.

Especially with comments like this:rolleyes:
ooh, I thought the internet was one big boys club, is it not? that's a sadge from me, it's a well known joke on the internet, so I don't think that any girls who frequent the internet that much will see it as anything other than the infamous humourous rule 30 of the internet meme, maybe there needs to be a whole alternative rules of the internet for women, rule one, I guess, is never use a female name unless you are on mumsnet, rule 2, never admit to being female, because sex doesn't matter on the internet

is there any way we can make, I mean help women feel more comfortable on the internet, and not dark ill-humourously expect them to be quiet, like good girls?,
I remember the mumsnet thread about the mother of three, who said her husband would not let them have an au pair, so the women of mumsnet all told her leave him, how does that compare to one person on ocuk saying there are no girls on the internet? shocking is a two way street imho, I only trolled mumsnet once, as soon as I said i'd found a blonde hair in our bed, everyone said leave him, it was only then that I remembered that my hypothetical family had a blonde cleaner(so totally possible that one of her hairs could be in the bed after making the bed, but there were no pro men detectives on there it seemed, I shudder to think how many families have been ruined by mumsnet, so I have to say that there is some seriously bad sexism on the internet, but it's not all about how terrible men are towards women
I'm not sure I even want to be a man any more. I want to be a woman

here is an excerpt from the review from the one I linked so keep an eye on that one come black friday?
"One of the common concerns with OLED monitors is burn-in, but Gigabyte has included several features to mitigate this risk. The FO27Q3 comes with an OLED Care suite that includes pixel shifting, sub-logo dimming, corner dimming, and pixel cleaning. These features help to prevent static images from causing permanent damage to the screen. Additionally, the monitor comes with a 3-year warranty that covers burn-in, providing extra peace of mind."

Sounds exactly like all the features my telly has.

I don't your truly constantly displays a task bar or other static elements quite as regularly as a desktop monitor though.

I'm sure the technology must have come on well since lots of people do seem to get on fine with them. But I can understand ops reluctance, even if it's just a mental anxiety

nice...use my monitor for work too so 48" lg c4 for the same price...would have prefrred 42" as then roughly same ppi as the 27" 1440p screen, but not available where I am. what gpu you going to go for to drive games at 360fps?
as a side note, nice thing about the lg(sure others do it also) is that you can change the screen size, so have it as ultrawide with black bars etc...las tnight I wanted to know if my 3070ti could actually push higher framerates, so loaded Titanfall2 up(already on my pc) and set it to windowed 1440p...so window ended up being roughly similar to a 32" 1440 screen my guess...glad to know it maxed it at 144hz..have to say, with instance response time of oled, 144hz was great...no smearing, ghosting or whatever that i could see..of course never tried faster, so don't know what I'm missing

gonna start with a5700xt nitro (lol)
then a7900 XTX the nitro version for the fancy RGB,

or maybe the 4080 super, depending on black friday deals it's a big lump of money to him, so we might as well wait a bit if it saves him a hundred or so quid, and I know that he has been drooling over 4080 supers for a while now, he is prepared to totally dial down settings, or just enjoy some League of Legends in glorious OLED for the meantime, it's no biggy to him, there's plenty of life left in the 5700 xt with sensible game choices, he'll be able to enjoy a 1440 OLED for the now, because £100 could be the best part of some fresh new trainers to him, priorities, man, priorities

and if that doesent work we will sell it, and we will build up funds towards a 5000 series card, or he has shown interest in buying my 4090, when I get the 5090

my parts always trickle down to him, it's just that he has a real job now so can afford to buy things from me, or at least go halvers on new things for him with my half / xmas/birthday monies too.

We have a planned upgrade path for him

Monitor> gpu,>gpu? >and when he gets cpu bottlenecked, which he will do, we then upgrade his CPU, currently on an amd ryzen 1600x, but being AM4 at least we have good options just a shame there won't be many new 5800 x3d chips around by then, maybe the new am5 cpu will lower prices of Am4 too , so maybe a new 5600 still, or maybe a second hand 5700x3d , or a used 5800x3d,who knows

when I hop over to 8k, he will get my 4K monitor which he should be able to run after we have done everything we can towards getting his 1440 to run at high fps!

he's not just going to get a 4k monitor, and then go oh **** what do I do now? >.<

honestly I think he will go down the 4080 super route because the heart wants what the heart wants

We have a much thought about, planned upgrade path for him:

Before you ask, I overspecced his current build's PSU to be able to run any of those with a beefy 850w seasonic platinum
honestly I think he will go down the 3080 super route because the heart wants what the heart wants, I think plus I can't hop onto a 5090, and 8k until febuary, so that rules out the 4090 for the near future
