New 6600k build wont boot.

It seems that since windows 10 arrived a lot of pcs start acting weird or just wont start anymore.Mine did the same without any reason a few days after i upgraded to windows 10.My friend pc just died a few days ago out of the blue after a windows update.

I'm sorry I don't have a spare PSU to test. Do you think it may be the PSU?

Sounds like it could be to me.

If your PSU is a few years old, then I would personally bite the bullet and buy a top brand 700/800w if it was me.

Psu's are frequently over looked when there are issues.

Hi,

I had an email yesterday from Overclockers saying there is no fault with the board and that they booted to windows desktop with it!
So its either the CPU or the PSU still. So annoying! How should I proceed just buy a new PSU to rule that out or RMA the CPU?

If I take it to there shop on Saturday do you think they will be able to test it there without having to send in post etc..?

Thanks,
Sean

Did you ever get a resolution to your problem?

In my experience, CPU's very rarely fail.

The PSU is brand new, it's a superflower leadex gold edition 550w, modular PSU. I thought they had a great reputation.

Yes they are a decent make. Could still be faulty though.

Only real way to eliminate it would be as already suggested, to find someone with a spare PSU that you could try.

In cases like yours, I would always say either motherboard or PSU. So as you've had the mobo replaced, then I would say the finger is pointing at the PSU. Unless someone else has a suggestion.

Bit of a bugger really.

PS. Average failure rate for hardware these days is less than 1%. So you would need to be very unlucky to have got 2 duff motherboards.

This is very interesting to read, because I've had a strange issue with my new skylake rig. I too have the i5 6600k chip, an Asus Z170-A mobo, 16gb of DDR4 Kingston Hyper X Fury, 2666mhz. PSU is a super flower 550W, gold standard, modular. Samsung Evo 250gb ssd, plus 2tb seagate SHDD.
When I built the system, tried to power up, no POST. Just fans spinning and 2 green LED's on mobo.
Scratching my head for ages, trying to figure out what was going wrong. I followed all the steps, looked at loads of websites, trying to find a solution, even breadboarding the system, clearing CMOS etc, but rang overclockers, they said it maybe a mobo issue. So I RMA'd the motherboard, and received a replacement a few days later.
So I rebuilt the system, and tested it out, before fixing it into the case. It worked, so I installed the rest of the components. So everything was looking good, managed to install windows 10, and all the other software that I wanted, all good.
So after a few hours of using my new PC, all of a sudden, the PC immediately shut off and restarted by itself. I have never seen this before. Then about 15 mins later it did it again. So I thought, that some sort of fail safe was kicking into action, and I switched off the PC for night.
The next day, I go to switch on the system, and I'm back to square 1, the system wasn't even going to POST. What an earth was going on? I stripped down the system again to breadboard, and everything was removed, except the CPU, HSF, and 1 stick of memory. Then switched on, and it POSTED, then put it all back together again, updated the BIOS on the motherboard. Everything was fine again, no switching off by itself.
Next day go to switch on, and no POST, just fan spinning on CPU, case fans and GPU fan. I'm at a loss, to why this happening. I've ordered from eBay a PC POST analyser, so that should be here in a few days.
If anyone has any other suggestions, to what's going on, please advise.

Cheers

Try disconnecting the seagate completely and try booting, i've known mechanical HD's to cause all sorts of strange issue including booting

I tried disconnecting the seagate, still no joy. No boot at the moment. Earlier on I Did manage to get the PC to boot, but it just shut off on its own, after a few minutes, which leads me to think it's either a CPU or PSU problem. I've sent a RMA enquiry to OC to see what they say. Any other suggestions, I'm all ears.

If you manage to boot it again take a look into the bios at the cpu temps, are they all ok. if so would RMA the PSU

Ive only just got mine sorted this morning (im the OP), been busy at work and reading festival.

It was the PSU for me! Took it to another local shop and he said if works you will have to buy it (he opened a new one). It now POSTS.

Issue is.... The PSU is a Evo labs cronus modular 550w. Anyone even heard of it? Thinking about popping over to OCUK getting a another one and sticking this on ebay or something. I felt bad for the guy lol could hardly of just walked out.

I managed to buy a new PSU today, it's a corsair RM750i. The PC boots, but the annoying constant switching off on its own continues, so what now? Could it be incompatible RAM, I've heard of folks having issues with DDR 4, and ASuS motherboards. Mine is Kingston Hyper X Fury 16gb (2666mhz). Could the crashes have any bearing on the RAM?

By the way Sean I didn't mean to hijack your thread. I'm glad you got the issue cleared up.

Bloody hell.

Must admit that I'm out of ideas at the moment.

Though there do seem to be some reports / comments about memory compatibility issues on Z170A all round (always seems to be like this with immature BIOS's). Hence why I went with the Corsair Vengeance LPX, as most of the people reviewing Skylake seemed to be using this without issue.

Agree with Mikeo, went skylake 6600k on thursday and after the initial problem with the cooler (having to use old h60 as new one didn't arrive) all is well now.

Using the Corsair Vengeance LPX 16gb kit along with the Msi gaming 7 board and have had no problems. Temps are 25-35'C over the cores but no problems regarding non booting and restarts

Yes... it's a nice board isn't it. Some little issues in the BIOS still need addressing in my opinion. Mainly in the area of UEFI boot. Installed Windows 10 in UEFI mode (IE. not mbr) and it would not let me change the boot order when in combined UEFI/Legacy mode. Switched into UEFI only mode and then it seemed fine. Though strangely had to switch Secure Boot "on" to get a couple of bootable programs to work. Would have thought it would have been the other way round. Currently on BIOS 1.5 (think that's the latest). I'll keep an eye on later BIOS updates to see what they tinker with / fix. Early days for Z170A me thinks.

I'm using a i5 6600K and Corsair LPX Vengeance LPX 3000 Mhz on a Gigabyte Z170X Gaming 5 motherboard, and I've had no problems with it so far.
