New 7970 Issues

Picked up a 7970 over the weekend and have been struggling to get anything to run smoothly. I am running the latest 12.7 beta drivers which I updated too after initially struggling.

Games so far that I have issues with are as follows:

BF3 - Random choppiness in frame rate
Black Ops - As above
Skyrim - As above
Dues Ex - As above
Metro 2033 - As above
Rage - As above

I think the only game that seems to be ok is F1 2011.

Now I'm sure someone will say its me and/or my rig but if it is please point me in the right direction as I haven't a clue with drivers etc with AMD.

Does anyone think I should do a fresh install of Windows, especially considering I have swapped from a 470/670 to a 7970? Do I need this "Catalyst Application Profile"? Should I use a different AMD driver?

At this stage I think my 670 issues pale into insignificance compared with what I have now.

Please help.

Ok will do, I was thinking of doing this anyway has been a long long time and its probs a bit messy by now.

Saying that, I now have managed to get max Payne 3 and BF 3 running nicely but im still gonna do a clean install soon.

Can anyone tell me though which drivers they would recommend for CAT's they would recommend??

Also do I need to do anything with the CAP (12.6) that I have downloaded, does it automatically work for the corresponding game?

EDIT - I see the the CAP works auotmatically.

It's you and your rig!:p

I would try uninstalling through amd in control panel>remove everything and install the 12.4's although if your using Max Payne 3 best performance was through the 12.6 beta.

The betas can be quite iffy though at times and that's maybe what is going wrong.

The 12.7's are probably very rough round the edges.

Haha Tommy, you know I think you might be right! After all there's been quite a few posts from me lately and my various adventures with different GFX cards :)

Anyway cheers for the info although I will probs do a fresh install though along with trying 12.4's

One good thing, BF3 is now running better than I have ever had it on any previous card, although I cant quite max it out without OC'ing my card a little, not sure if this is what I should expect.

Just to let you know I also went with the Asus 7970 Direct CU II Top, it was about £40 cheaper than the lightning, its a big ol doorstep thats for sure. Nice though!

You might want to try running afterburner with the stats overlay and see what your card is doing and make sure the card is clocking the core and ram upto the quoted speeds while under load.

Funny you should mention this as now I notice that I am seeing exactly this, i.e. the GPU frequency sits at 500MHz and doesn't ramp up (on some occasions) to the 1GHz it is supposed to be. Confirmed this with EVGA Precision.

Anyone have any ideas for this? Just about to try 12.4 like Tom suggested

Anything to do with this?: 7950 stuck at 500mhz using video issue

See post #8.

OK 12.4's in.

regarding the 500MHz thing, sounds like this may be the problem, i.e. going to 2D clocks, need to test to confirm.

Hopefully can just close the browser and it should sort it, bit stupid though imo but there you go.

Ok kind of fixes the problem turning off HW acceleration for flash, but still only goes back to 500MHz instead of 300MHz.

Also, once in this state I notice that it completely ignores my OC that I have applied for some games and it wont go over 1000MHz despite having 1125 set it CCC.

I dont want to start a war here guys but this whole issue seems a bit ridiculous

Guess it just tough s&^t really lol, ill try rebooting, at least I can get the clock back to normal must remember not to open any flash if I plan to game.

Is there anyway I can turn this feature off in CCC or something?

I had the same problem and i find that either un-tick CCC in start up options of windows so its not running ever or uninstall just the CCC part and use afterburner as primary program for overclocking and temps.Works load better IMO and you can set profiles for low power states or lack there-of.

I found the only time my 7970 would get stuck at 500mhz was when I had a youtube video open, could possibly be the same with any other video player. Doesnt even have to be playing, just open.

Hope that helps :)

Thanks for the answers guys.

One other thing I have noticed is that after completely removing all tarces of the 12.7 beta drivers including folders, registry entries the lot, after installing 12.4 CCC reports the Catalyst version (within information>software) as 12.7?

Whats that all about? I deffo installed 12.4?

Anyone :( ?

Spent more time messing around with different drivers and installing CAP's etc than gaming. Since I im yet to find an answer I'm going to reinstall windows and start with a clean slate. Hopefull it will report that the drivers I actually installed are installed lol.
