New Additional Hard Drive No Longer Showing in This PC or Explorer

Unfortunately this is the backup disk to free up storage on my C: drive.
I have a 300GB external drive that I could use for recovery, but do not want to risk losing 20 years of family photographs and I know I should have backed them up to Google Drive.
If it's a backup drive do you have another copy on a different drive? It's most likely toast if disk management is showing the wrong capacity and asking to initialize.

unless anyone else has any ideas that
havent previously been mentioned?

My experience with SSDs magical mystery ways are that just disconnecting it entirely for a few days (and/or leaving it powered without data cable connected) * can cause it be accessible again, but I don't know if that's applicable to the OP's specific issue.

*
  1. If possible, connect the SSD via a hard drive enclosure or USB adapter, then plug it in to a USB port (preferably a different system if possible, to rule out system-level malfunctions). Whether the drive is visible or not, let it sit in this state for a minimum of five minutes to allow the SSD to rebuild its mapping tables, then reboot the system and see if the drive is restored.
  2. If a USB adapter is not available, reseat the drive and boot in to your system’s BIOS or UEFI with the drive connected normally for a minimum of five minutes to allow the drive to attempt this same rebuild, then reboot the system and see if the drive is restored.
Note: This mode may be less effective than a USB connection, as some systems will cut power to an attached device if the drive does not mount normally.

I know it sounds weird, but it does work (sometimes).

@Tetras yeah i would never say that cant work
computers have a habit of doing things that shouldnt work
and likewise of not doing things that should work

@Eddie99 they dont have another backup
if they did we would have went straight to initialise it and format it
assuming it will initialise that is

still think they will have to try initialise
dont think recovery software will work on unitialised drive
though dont know 100% for sure it wont
as never tried it
personally i dont think its toast
i have had windows set my drives offline plenty times for no reason
though dont remember mine only showing part of the full size

@axel
heres easeus take on it
similar to what i said earlier
initialising the disk wont over write your data
as long as you dont then format it--create a partition
even then it might still be recoverable
i have recovered stuff even after windows has been installed on the drive
if it wont initialise then you know how bad it is

Tried to initialise the disk and I am getting "Incorrect Function" error. I am really stuck now as I cannot even bite bullet, lose the data and reformat the disk as I cannot see it. Easus found 257GB "lost partition, scanned the disk and found no files.

Any further help would be appreciated.

Did you try my suggestion? Sometimes if the drive is corrupted on a lower level (e.g. through unexpected power loss), it can repair itself and it'll resist attempts to correct it manually.

yeah definitely not good it wont initialise
try @Tetras suggestion
i would also suggest as mentioned already
try a different sata cable it may just be a faulty cable
try a different sata port too
try a different sata power connector too just in case

if nothing brings it to life
there are data recovery places that can do stuff the
ordinary user cant
but its not going to be cheap
with mechanical drives i used to try replacing the controller pcb
with an identical one which did work
but probably cant do that with a ssd without specialist equipment anyway

I have disconnected the drive this morning and will leave it for day or two. I also have a new SATA cable which I will use when I reconnect.

I also tried plugging in my 300GB USB external hard drive to check if some files were on there. The drive was recognised and I got the small icon on the task bar but again it did not appear in This PC, although it does appear in Disk Management and is noted as heathy. Could the issue be with This PC?

I have just discovered that Windows is not automatically assigning a drive letter to external drives. I added one to my external hard drive in disk management and it appeared immediately in This PC with full access available. Could this possibly be the same issue with my internal hard drive, currently disconnected?

Not if it failed to initialise.

All sorted, so many thank for all the help. Reconnected the drive today with new sata cable and different sata port. Windows found the drive with the correct size and initialised it. I found that I had also backed up my files on the 300MB external drive so I just formatted the additional internal one and all is well.

Great to hear
Now it's working try to have as many backups as possible
In separate places
Some people think I am over the top but
If stuffs important and irreplaceable I have 5 backups
3 separate in the PC
And 2 external/isolated from the pc
Storage is reasonably cheap nowadays luckily
