I know this has been asked before but i'm after upgrading from my agp card (9700), looking to spend about £100-£150 as i can't afford a full system upgrade yet. So just looking for something to do me for a few months, that will be decent with new games as well. Not fussed whether its Ati or Nvidia, so long as its better than my current card. :)

Also i've heard about the 7600GT cards, but can't find any agp ones. Are they just pcie or are the agp ones not available yet?

I just ordered a 6800GS (Gainward BLISS GeForce 6800 GS "Golden Sample" 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI (AGP) - Retail (GX-031-GW)) today. I couldn't justify a 7800-core card, but I'm not planning a PCI-E upgrade for a while, so £170 isn't too bad :)

Looking in the clearance section, i've noticed these 2 cards;

Connect3D ATI Radeon X800 Pro "OcUK 16 Pipeline Special Edition" 256MB

&

Point of View GeForce 6800 GT 256MB

Both within my price range, is one "better" than the other or are they both on par, which one of those 2 would you guys go for?

The 6800gt imo and has sm3 support

I totally agree with Jabbs and i'm an ATi nut!!!

3 games plus, as it'll probably overclock to (and possibly past) ultra speeds, it's more comparable to the x850xt than anything. For the money you can't really beat it!

I've an x850xt in an a64 3700+ system with 4gd ram and i must admit that my second pc with a 6800 ultra in a 3000+ athlon system with 2gb of ram comes damn close in gaming performance terms! Plus, as Jabbs mentioned, sm3 support!

Go on - melt that credit card!!! ;)

Just a quick update on the 6800GT.

Card arrived this morning, as soon as i got home from work installed it and fired up Oblivion. You can probably imagine how this ran on a 9700, but the difference is amazing. The amount of extra detail and stuff now is unbelieveable, it also runs smooth now as well. Also tried the GRAW demo and that too plays miles better, gonna try BF2 later see what that runs like.

But all in all i'm one happy chap, thanks for the help again guys and thanks to ocuk for the good deals. :D

Great news proc! :D

Glad you're happy with it!!! Should do you a good service for the next year or two - not bad for such a cheap card!

Kepp us posted on BF2!

Incidentally, if you find the cooler's a bit loud or you wanna overclock the card make sure to get an Arctic Cooling NV Silencer 5

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Arctic_Cooling_395.html

At £14 it's a total steal and will drop your load and idle temps a great deal. My idle temps went from 40 degrees C to 34 degrees C and load dropped from high 60's to high 50's. I've not tried to overclock as it's already an ultra but yours should get to ultra speeds with no problems! ;)

Had my old GT @ Ultra speeds. It's a great card.
It'll do BF2 @ max settings with 4aa & 16af 1280x1024 perfectly. If you only have 1Gb ram (not 2Gb) then you'll need to lower texture & light to medium.

Congrats on a cracking card!

I'm not listening to you gt_junkie anymore, trying to make me spend more money. ;) Coolers not too bad actually, played Oblivion for a good few hours last night and it kept pretty cool.

Not tried clocking it yet but gonna have a look into it, tried BF2 set it to 1280x1024, max settings with 4aa & 8af and it slowed down like mad, unplayable. Tried it at 1024x768 and it was still really choppy, i'll try lowering some settings and what no_1_dave says, and see what happens.

whar proc and memory you got?

on my xp2500 with 1 gig ram, i play BF2 at 1280 with all on max, except shadows turned down and lighting and textures med. That runs fine, give that a try.

Always been an affliction of mine - just tryin to spread the bug to others!!! ;) :p

I promise not to make you spend any more cash as it sounds like the card's doing well!

I'll also second the 2 gig comment from no_1_dave. Should sort the bf2 chop issue! But remember - it was his comment so he's the one tempting you to buy that second gig!!! :D
