Just thourght i would make a thread on this.
Finally there is some good news regarding the stadium; looks nailed on that we will be given a 999 year lease on an area of Stanley Park to build the new stadium, also looks like we are going to get the NWDA grant and the EU grant becuase it looks as if we have finally produced enough evidence to prove we have the money to meet our end of the deal.
Total cost of the project is going to be around £240m which will cover the stadium and a regeneration of the whole area. Liverpool will have to come up with £180m and will also have to pay £300k a year rent to the council. And best of all they reckon the stadium could be ready for the opening day of the 2009/10 season.

Liverpool need a new ground and I hope this comes off for them. It will be a shame to see Anfield go though as the atmosphere there is great and the place is steeped in history.

I remember all to well 4-3 defeats there though. :(

i just hope we don't get a replica reebok stadium. it could be catostrophic for us to move ground as the new regulations mean the stands have to be a certain distance from the pitch...

i am very clearly against a move....

New stadiums are not built for atmosphere they are built for money.

Its a shame but big clubs need big ticket money these days.

And I'd argue the Atomsphere at Ashburton Grove will be far better than it was at Highbury even for the biggest game ;)

Well at the JJB its crap but Highbury it was amazing, so close, so loud, so old school.

why carnt anfield been modified? old trafford had another couple of thousand stacked on in the corner i believe, surly major re-development of the stands could work in everyones favour.. keep the history.. keep the stadium, but increase the attendances..?

As far as I know, the stands could be further expanded at Old Trafford but local residents objected to it or something along those lines. Maybe it's the same at Anfield.

Probably, Highbury was a listed building but was already completely backed out onto residential areas. The same goes for Anfield and Goodison Park in Liverpool

because it's built in a residential area. it's surrounded by terraced houses pretty much on all sides, when they re-did the Kop and the centeanery (sp) stand they went as far as they could. most of the locals around the ground refused to move (which they are perfectly within their fights to do ofc) so the rest of the stadium can't be expanded further, plus i'm not sure the infrastructure could handle another 15 or so thousand fans atm. it's build a new one or stay im afraid.

as a liverpool fan i will ofc be sad to see anfield go, it's a mecca to me. when the Kop went everyone thought it would go down hill but everyone got over it and it still remains a ground with a fantastic atmosphere, especially on european nights. im confident that the new stadium will do us proud, add that to the fact that it will re-generate the area it can only be good for liverpool fc and the city.

disagree, the fans are far too impotant to liverpool, shown by out joint lowest ticket prices in the whole premiership, less than half of chelski and the arse.
I cant see them building a boring stadium with no atmosphere! Should be grat for us, and we need it if we are to cement ourselves as a major force.

only 60k capacity?

honestly why go to all that effort just to get a stadium which has 15k more seats than anfield? seems almost pointless to me.. aim higher! :D

I second that !!

What a waste of time. Is anyone in Liverpool aware of how many people would travel to games if they knew they had a good chance of getting a ticket for a home game?

The millenium stadium holds 80,000 people and what an awesome stadium it is. I saw Cheltenham get promoted twice there and the stadium was only half full but man did we make some noise and the atmosphere and the whole day was electric. I have also watched Liverpool play there and must say we might as well just move the millenium stadium and place it in Stanley Park, and keep Anfield as a training ground ! :p

All those peeps going on about Anfield and the "atmosphere" have a reality check. When we do move to a new Stadium It will be the Liverpool fans who will make that Stadium like home in no time, the more the merrier :D

cost and space i suspect. don't forget that the area itself is being regenerated along with the building of the new stadium. i suspect that there was something in the plans and funding arangements which set the capacity.

It would be great to maybe have a 70k capacity, god knows that we could easily fill it - esp. on the big games.

Great news about the new stadium though, hopefully it'll knock a few thousand off the season ticket list as well and i'll be closer to getting one!!
