Quick question that I could not find answered on Apple's site. Is the Apple TV announced last week different to the old one? I know they touted 1080p playback as a new feature but was wondering if that is just a software update or whether this is a new feature for the newer units, due to better hardware.

It's more than an update... although I believe people had 1080p content running on hacked versions of the previous model, so is it Apple deliberately stifling old devices again?

It's got a new navigation menu system also.

The old one has new menu too.

The 2012 ATV3 has an A5 chip which enables proper 1080P output. the ATV2 could only output at 720P.

I'm at work so can't check, but is there a software update for the aTV2 to give it the new navigation? I presumed it was only available for the 2012 model when I watched the keynote.

I wonder how quickly I can jailbreak it, is there going to be a version of XBMC for ATV3 that supports the 1080p playback?

No, as ATV2 can only do 720p (Hardware), if you play a 1080p file through an ATV2 is just "downscales".

I'm not sure if there is a need for XBMC anymore. The standard Apple movies section works perfectly fine for storing films - and is actually quite nicely presented in a minimalist kind of way!

It's nicer to be able to use a NAS to serve files, rather than a pc... Not everyone wants to buy all their films from itunes... the list goes on...

Who said anything about buying from itunes? They'd get there the same way MKV's get on a NAS...

Why is it "nicer"? I'd rather have 1 machine on rather than a NAS and a PC. By consolidating everything into iTunes I get a fully organised set of media that is easily accessed from iPhone, iPad, ATV etc. Home sharing for example works brilliantly across all devices.

The list hasn't "gone on" though has it... you stopped at 2 points, one of which isn't even a point.

I think he's pointing out that by storing them on a NAS there is no need for a PC to even be on.

XBMC on the ATV2 allows you to stream any format straight from NAS without any conversion.

Most people that I know who rip blurays rip them to .mkv

People who "source" films, tend to do it in .mkv and not in .m4a

Why do you want to have your PC on when watching a film? I'd rather just have a NAS doing the serving.

You talk about having integration of everything, then you want one of your clients to be the server, wouldn't you rather have the files centrally?
