New Apple TV

I just got mine. Really nice package - it's my first Apple TV.

I'm just waiting for the firecore guys to jailbreak it so I can stream movies directly from my Synology NAS :)

The points about NAS are valid, seems pointless to have all my legal iTunes content stored on my NAS if I then need a PC/Mac on to access it via Apple TV. The cloud storage is a half way house as I don't want to have to download everything each time I want to access it and also it would be nice to offer playback of other data formats too. I'd be happy simply with Apple TV seeing the NAS without the need for an iTunes instance, there is little reason for this and the "just switch on a PC" brigade miss the point of having a bloody NAS.

This. ^^^^^

I didn't sit and feed 1000+ DVDs through Handbrake for the fun of it. The 360 is utterly useless at streaming them with the pass-thru soundtracks intact, so it's ATV instead!

Come on Seas0npass/Firecore dudes, you know you can do it....

Atv3 all set up, very cool. Wish movies in the cloud was available in the uk though as i have many movies purchased through itunes or digital copies that could be upscaled, sure it wont be long though.

I have my itunes libray on a NAS box cant say i hve any issues, mac mini stays sleeping and i can access all my content, quite happy with that

Old and the new!

Boots much faster but other than that I can't see much difference.

One of the reasons Apple make so much money (aside from selling a lot of stuff), is they're brilliant at recycling materials. This goes all the way from leftover's from the sheets of aluminium which make part of the iMac's bezel being used to create the Macbook Pro's unibody keyboard area to accessories lasting more than one generation to simply keeping external designs the same when there's no reason to change - as is the case here. It's the guts that needed updating, which seems as minor an upgrade as replacing the processor for a better one.

Picked up the new version today, just waiting on an updated version of Handbrake that will support 1080p conversions as the existing version only supports Apple Tv 2 720p.

Cheers guys

I have a iMac upstairs with movies within itune I never turn my iMac off it goes in sleep mode ie turn screen off etc.. If I had a atv3 would it wake the iMac up to connect to the itune library?

Also does aperture library work with atv3?

My Mac Mini stays asleep when i connect to my tines library although my library is on a has. I also have aperture pictures on my ATV 3

Just picked one up yesterday and a few things I thought I would say.

- Music - why can't this be a direct conenction to Shared rather than Match, I don't use match and never will, or at least an option
- Other boxes - why? I'd like the ability to turn these off
- TV SHows / Movies - could this point to a shared on a server rather than through iTunes (at least option)

Airplay is good so far, not tried mirroring yet.

I'm not sure if there is a need for XBMC anymore. The standard Apple movies section works perfectly fine for storing films - and is actually quite nicely presented in a minimalist kind of way!
XMBC slaughters normal apple playback etc. Supports way more formats and plays off network drives for starters.

The only difference between ATV 2 and 3 afaik is the A5 SoC enabling 1080p output as opposed to 720p as menntioned. Other then that, they're the same.
