Haha at the idiot who said 205's are overated. I drove one for the first time last week, a battered 150k mile 500 quid 1.9. I now want one so very bad :(

I'm being called an idiot by a muppet who's driven a shonkey old Pug and now wants one.

lol at you sir, lol at you..

The only people i know with Vauxhalls bought them because they know little about cars, didn't research any alternatives, or simply didn't care.

The other people with them bought them because they were £1000 bangers and/or given to them for free.

Sums most Vauxhalls up for me, for people who do not understand or care about cars.

Pfft.
Theres no need for that and im sure the many owners forums would prove you wrong for this whole ignorance claim.

Personally I bought mine as im a 19 year old student in my first year at uni who wanted something bigger, better and nicer- Which I got in my special edition astra coupe.
I considered the focus but MK1 but having drove both my parents focii on many many occasions I really just wouldnt go for it- nevermind how common they are.
BMW arent an option for 19year old males in Northern Ireland unless youre frauding your insurance or doing overly well for yourself.
Meganes fall apart too much
Citroens I would never touch due to personal experience with the C2 and the Belfast main citroen dealer.

Such absolute arrogance in this thread. If its not an upmarket german then youre screwed.

i did actually want an evo but for the 18k i had to spend i would only get a 53 plate at the time not the 57 plate i have, i did not want a second hand car so does that make me thick with regards to choice of car,

Yes it doe's make you thick :D Only stupid people buy new cars, and only stupid people would buy a brand new astra over a 4 year old Evo.

Please don't take me seriously, I'm only pulling your leg

Don't mind Jez, hes just being hypocritical as he had a Vauxhall himself.

Yes the S Class is arguably one of the best cars ever made, doesn't mean you are all of a sudden above everyone else and can afford to be arrogant about it.

im certainly not stupid simply because i bought a brand new car, what on earth makes you think that your opinion is in any way better than anyone else's thats just blatent arrogance,

i take it by your name robrx-7 that you have a rx-7 or have had one, which meens you may have more money than the average person to pay for your engine rebuild every 40,000 miles due to the ****el engine in your car, but this in no way makes your opinion better than mine, thats all it is your opinion.

only stupid people would buy a brand new astra over a 4 year old Evo.

the other reason i decided against the evo was the service requirements of such an enthusiast car, knowing a little bit about cars does influence your purchase, things like engine rebuilds - short service intervals and general cost of running make more of an influence on what people purchase than simply wanting something that little bit better, which makes a person more sensible in their purchase not stupid,

Calm down Mr. It's just a bit of freindly pub banter. I just despise folk that buy brand spanking new cars knowing they lose a lot of money, so IMO i guess that you have plenty of money unlike me driving a 17year old car ;)

If the only two cars presented to me were a brand new Astra and a 4 year Evo I honestly dont know which I'd chose. It might well be the Astra. Am I stupid?

Thankfully this hypothetical world where people find themselves having to chose between an Astra and an Evo doesnt exist.

However, I was driving Astra GTE's when they were only a couple of years from new. Having owned several I have an idea of what they're like. Saying there are better cars doesn't mean they're rubbish which is what's being implied. Besides the handling being poor, performance and build was equal or about the compertition at the time. The GTE still out performs many of the new hot hatch's. 205's are over rated. I had a 1.6 and 1.9 and both were nasty tin boxes. OK the Nova is also a nasty tin box but not as bad as the Pug, which was only slightly faster. Handling on the Nova could match the Pug without too much trouble.

Not much point in a hot hatch with poor handling, so that's a pretty big "besides"

As for the Nova GTE being better than a 205 GTI, sorry but just no. Not in a month of Sundays, and I'm a BIG Nova fan, lost count of the number of times I have defended them on these forums over the years. It's a capable car but just not as good as the 205. Or the 309. Or the R5 GTT. Or the Golf GTI.

I currently own a sporty 80's Opel and a sporty 80's Peugeot so I have no reason to give bias to either manufacturer!

Eh!? In what kind of messed up world would you have a new Astra over a 2005 Evo IX? :p
