Yawn,
Something I was curious about. Does anyone ever actually buy a Vauxhall at full price because they really really want one, or is it simply that they're knocked out cheap or sold as hire cars?
I don't remember ever coming across one that had a desirability level above that of a cold cabbage (apart from the VXR8).

Same goes for any car as anyone who plays retail price is a fool.

Nah, they've not had many desirable cars over the years, unless you coun't the Astra GTE, Lotus Carlton, VX220, Zafira GSi, Astra/Vectra VXR and the Insignia, which is a class leader.

If you're only classing the VXR8 as their only cold cabbage beater it's probably best if everyone ignores you trolling.

Don't forgot Nova GTE, Omega, Monaro...

All of the properly WANT ONE!!! Vauxhalls are rebadged somethingelses.

Lotus Carlton doesnt wear a Vauxhall badge, the Monaro and VXR8 are made by Holden, Lotus put the VX220 together.

Which leave us with what? Some 80's hatchbacks most of us were too young to remember being anything other than rusty heaps down Maccy D's and a range of overpowered FWD stuff in a posh blue colour with VXR on the back.

Joy.

Does it really matter what the badge behind the badge is? Essentially they are all under the brand of GM, Vauxhalls get badged as Renaults, Holdens get badged as Opels etc. etc. They are still Vauxhalls at the end of the day, your deep hatred of such a brand is quite sad to be honest.

When we are judging Vauxhall themselves ability to build good cars, of course it matters.

My deep hatred is second only to your irrational bias, understandable as it may be given how long your father worked for them.

Not being old enough to remember or them being 'rebadged' means very little really. They're all part of the same family.

I have to lol at the overpowered FWD comment. Having driven the Corsa, Astra and Vectra VXR's on the road and around a track I've found they all handle the power with much less trouble than they're hyped to.

Don't forget the Omega though, that was pretty decent. Vauxhall always seemed to get the really big stuff right. Shame it didn't rub through on the Vectra, a car so bad they've binned the name for the latest version.

My mum worked for them longer than my dad did. Also it's not irrational bias, you would have thought that having two cars on the driveway, one of which is supposedly the best car in the world and one which is supposedly the worst car in the world would have changed my opinions. Fact is Vauxhall make very competent cars that also look the best in each of their classes, it's a car which does the job well and I think you miss this point as you aren't their target market so you will never really understand.

For example I doubt you would ever buy a Vauxhall no matter how good it was, just because of the brand.

I'm not sure what went wrong with the Vectra. tbh I prefer the newer Vectra (SRi 150 Oil Burner) to my Mondeo Zetec 130 tractor. Pound for pound the Vectra is a nicer car but on paper the Mondeo is more impressive.

I always felt it was on the road where the Mondeo impressed as the paper stats for both are largely the same.

As Fox has already stated, the VX220 and Lotus Carlton aren't really just Vauxhalls are they?
The Insignia? So they've wrapped a naff interior in a vaguely snazzy exterior, that's like an Audi that's drooped like a wax model in an oven. Fine apart from the fact that it's buggered up the only useful element of the Vectra, i.e. it's space. Have you tried getting in the back of an Insignia?
As for the older GTEs, you might have forgotten that I was driving when they were new and know only too well just how many other cars at the time were a better overall proposition. e.g. the Nova GTE, who in their right mind chose one over a 205 1.9?

The brakes and steering are far heavier on the Mondeo and doing any distance leaves me more tired than in the Vectra. Handling is an odd one, the Mondeo seems to have the better chassis but the vectra has more grip, if that makes sense.

you can pick at any topic and twist the outcome to your side of the fence, so there's not point us arguing about it.

However, I was driving Astra GTE's when they were only a couple of years from new. Having owned several I have an idea of what they're like. Saying there are better cars doesn't mean they're rubbish which is what's being implied. Besides the handling being poor, performance and build was equal or about the compertition at the time. The GTE still out performs many of the new hot hatch's. 205's are over rated. I had a 1.6 and 1.9 and both were nasty tin boxes. OK the Nova is also a nasty tin box but not as bad as the Pug, which was only slightly faster. Handling on the Nova could match the Pug without too much trouble.

If the 205 was a nasty tin box one has to ask why you then bought another.

I bought the first one and was given the seconds one by my uncle.

The second one was turned into a track car shortly after it was given to me and is still used on Public track day.
