This thread is lacking in exterior pictures.

This looks like a REALLY bad Kia!

I love that the badge is covered in those interior shots but that interior would fail to belong to any car other than a vauxhall.

But then Aldi is rated postively amongst its competition as well, such as a Lidl, doesn't make them a good shop in the grand scheme of things nor somewhere I'd ever buy.

I don't quite get that comment, well I do get the comment, I'm struggling to put that into context..

I can certainly see and appreciate the difference between an E60 BMW 535d Sport (or whatever) and a 1.4 Astra Design, are you suggesting in some odd way that when I sit in the BMW, I can't quantify the quality differences, or the difference in chassis? Because you'd be quite wrong.

What I, or all the reivews, don't see, is the gulf of disparity between (for example) the Focus and the Astra that you suggest exists.. Since my own views are reasonably well aligned with the motoring press, you can understand that when you say how poor quality the Astra interior is, yet seem to suggest that a Focus is ten times better.. when the 'fact' is they are quite similar.. there are as many nice and nasty plastics used in each and both are as *cough* well screwed together by and large.

That is all ;)

I've never suggested the Focus is ten times better, I suspect that was others not myself. Frankly the levels of quality in that entire class, Golf included, are far from brilliant, but the Astra is the dunce of the class therefore why bother when the Focus and Golf are a bit better.

ORly?, just taken from your last thread on the subject..

It's a really, really crap car - I've driven a Mk5 Astra and it didn't have a single redeeming feature as long as you assume 'you dont get wet when it rains' etc doesn't count.

Surpised. The Focus I thought was considerably better in every possible way - the Mk5 Astra sums up everything wrong with Vauxhall. Truely nasty.

Whats worse? It's only nice to drive if you've recently stepped out of a Corsa or a Yugo.

Poor interior quality - I hate touching nasty, cheap plastics, Ungainly handling, Annoying noisy rattle from the engine compartment constantly, makes the dash shake when sitting at traffic lights, Irritating power delivery

etc,etc,etc,.......

Now, you look at Whatcar/Auto Express et al, and the Astra is a 4 star car, as is the Focus..

Here's some snippets
Ride & handling
wc_small_4.gif

The Astra is one of the most enjoyable cars in this class to drive. The steering is responsive and provides crisp direction changes, while the Astra feels nimble through bends and grips well. The ride is supple over most surfaces, although sportier versions have a firmer set-up that isn’t quite as forgiving.

Quality & reliability

The Astra’s build quality appears to be first-rate. Most of the plastics and materials that occupants come into contract with are sturdy and soft to the touch, lending an air of quality that was absent in its predecessor. Vauxhall has a reputation for strong, reliable engines and we see no reason for this to slip with the latest Astra.

Again, I'm not saying the Astra is class leading, but it is pretty decent in it's class, all the motoring press seem to align fairly well, and my own experience of them isn't too far out..

Face it, on this particular example, you make Jeremy Clarkson look like William Wollard ;)

(This is only half-hearted.. I really don't want to put too much effort into arguing over a relatively middle of the road class of cars)..

I gotta say the new Golf is excellent inside now, it better than the current A3, I spent 4 hours in one yesterday and im quite impressed. quality is as good if not better than the 1 series, pity it looks bland as anything.I like the new CR engine aswell, quite revvy for a boggo diesel, wouldnt have one tho, the price is ridiculous.

I said the Focus was, in my opinion, considerably better. I stand by that. At no point did I say it was 10 times better because it quite clearly isn't.

It's not use trying to play it down ;) I think your very contrasting views on the Astra/Focus and Vx/Ford have been very well documented over many years.. to try and put a new spin on it is not fooling me ;)

:)

Oh, and you can stand by your 'considerably' opinion, but can you find any credible facts to back that up?
btw, "Considerable - large or relatively large in number or amount or extent or degree"

not - " a bit"...

;)

How can you provide fact to substantiate subjective opinion?

I see where you are trying to take it ;)

So are you saying that your opinion is entirely subjective, and cannot ever be backed up with evidence/proof, in essence, it's piffle and best ignored? :) because it certainly seems like you present this as an opinion with some valid substance.

:)

Hey People,

I know how much you all hate the Astra, I see at least 40 of them an hour ;)

I see more beamers tbh ;). IMO i quite like the shape of the astra, and the shape of the astra has sparked off a load of new models.

New Corsa = New Astra but squashed

New Fiesta = New Corsa

New Ka = Squashed Fiesta

So it cant be all that bad can it? ;)

This is what opinion means

1. a belief or judgment that rests on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty.
2. a personal view, attitude, or appraisal.

Can you provide proof that what cars or autoexpresses opinion is correct? or is it best ignored as well.

My opinion is the astra is a poor car though not quite as bad as the corsa i drive. I found the focus considerably better

How am I supposed to present facts to support an opinion on the level of quality present in an interior? You can't support things like that with fact, it's subjective.

It's like you saying Alfas are ugly and me asking you to provide a fact to support that, it's an utterly nonsensical thing to ask for.
