New Astra VXR gets 0-62mph time

Are most GTC not just a good looking 3 door version of the regular Astra diesel?

No, they're a lot more than that. The handling is transformed due to the addition of the HiPer Strut at the front, revised rear suspension, wider track, lower ride height, and a few other bits. It's also better equipped (e.g. SRi has half-leather, DAB, auto lights, auto wipers, USB etc).

To my mind, the GTC fixes the biggest downer on the 5dr which is the lack of feel and confidence in the car underneath you.

Plus the 1.6T is a pretty good engine if you dont want to go diesel but want a bit of performance. :)

Apart from the fact it's not cheap........

And every Vauxhall ive owned/worked with ahs been entirely bullet proof and not prone to rot, unlike say fords, which seem to dissolve the second the perforation warrenty expires.

It's cheap, plastic and tacky inside, 2 VXR owners i've know have had no-end of issues with the engine and turbo.
Just going on what i've seen, experienced and trust.

Its not cheap, its 27k.

And the VXR is the Astra H.

The current Astra is the J model which is an entirely different car and entirely different engine.

By your way of thinking there cant possibly be a decent BMW, Merc or Audi either, because as most people are aware, they have all spewed out some right old garbage over the years.

This thread is about the new Astra VXR, why are you talking about the old one?

The new Astra is built quite well and perfectly fitting for it's sector.

The review scores have started coming in and so far it is looking very, very positive.

Scores out of 10 so far

Evo - 9
Top Gear - 8
Car Magazine - 8
Auto Express - 10
What Car - 6
MSN - 8

What on earth is with that What Car score? They seem to be as far off the rest of the world as their What PC? magazine lol

All but What Car are saying this is the only competitor to stand up to the Meganne 265 RS, so the I suppose from now on the comparisons with the Renault will be booting out the Volkwagen Scirocco R and replacing them with Vauxhall Astra VXR.

This car looks extremely promising, and despite the fact it is a Vauxhall costing £27k as the base model the reviews suggest it is worth the money! All bar What Car? but then again, we know never to bother with any review, opinion or piece of advice written by the What? group haha

What Car? is ****. If it doesnt do 50mpg and have a 2 litre diesel they seem to hate it - they always seem to rate the base models as the 'best buy'. I think the 'Pick of the range' for the 1 Series Cabriolet was the 118d according to What Car? for example, which gives you an idea..

That said, the review itself doesnt seem to do what I expeted and **** it off for not being a diesel. Infact..

The VXR feels like it wants to follow every contour in the road and the steering wheel squirms in your hands under hard acceleration as the front wheels fight to turn torque into forward motion.

The fact that the steering is rather vague doesn’t help, and while you can give it a meatier feel by pressing the VXR button on the dash, this also makes it that much harder to drag the car back onto your intended line.

but then again, we know never to bother with any review, opinion or piece of advice written by the What? group haha

Same people as Autocar though...

Brand stigma takes a long time to shift, Vax built really nasty cars from 96ish - 08ish so you can understand why some people ignore how much better the new Astra and Insignia are.

You forgot the new shape Corsa as well, that was universally praised while the VXR 8 (formally Monaro) is lavished across the world. Vaux' rep has been increasing a lot since around 2006-2007, before that it was at an all time low.

No score from AutoCar, although they did give a poor review by comparison to everybody else so what you say about them being the same people sounds about right. :)

I feel sometimes badge snobbery plays a part in people's reviews, which is a shame, for me when I buy a car I am not buying a badge. lol

And the Bulger killers are reformed citizens but I wouldn't trust them to babysit and I don't even like or own children.

For most people a Vauxhall badge is basically a sticker that says "unreliable, badly/cheaply built garbage" I personaly have rented Insignias and new model Corsas and hated both, I'm not even that keen on Fords but I make a point of asking for one instead of a Vauxhall now whenever I call Enterprise.

The insignia was just a boring place to be in, the plastic felt like it was from recycled milk tray boxes and they seemed to be addicted to using 10 times as many buttons as they had to.

Rented three of these, one only had <7k miles and the flimsy plastic air vent on the passengers side had already fallen apart.

You can buy a 10+ year old Japanese car for £1-2k that is more reliable (even after being 10 years old), better kitted out, and all round better to drive.

Four stars out of five. Good bit of kit, that.

That has to be the worst analogie is the history of analogies, one is an organic being, the other is a designed metal machine with no freedom of thought or notions of past events.

Agreed, but the general public on the whole are uninformed idiots especially when it comes to buying cars.

Me too, the huge mistake people make is try and compare cars from one segment to those in another, the Corsa is never going to be a 1 series, the Astra is never going to be a 3 series and the insignia is never going to be a 5 series rival. However when you compare them to the respective other choices they all rate as quite good cars.

I'm no Vauxhall fan and even I’m not blinkered enough to fail to notice how much better Vauxhalls are these days.

You can buy a 10+ year old Japanese car for £1-2k that is more reliable (even after being 10 years old), better kitted out, and all round better to drive.

And we have it, your fanboyism knows no bounds.

With all due respect, I don't believe a word you are saying here. Just thought I would let you know that because you talk about flimsy plastic and then mention you ask for a Ford as if they are premium cars, which everybody here knows the interior of Fords are almost a carbon copy with Vauxhalls except in Vauxhalls they do put some leather on the inside of the doors (VXR models have it as standard).

You then talk about Vauxhalls falling apart but you fail to mention that many manufacturers including BMW have cars that consistently have pieces falling apart within a year of purchase.

But what clearly outlines you post as a troll post, and shows ingorance of motoring knowledge, is using an analogy against Vauxhall that compares them to murderers. I am suprised you haven't been warned for a such a pathetic post if I am honest. If you hate Vauxhall just because you support a different brand then why not just say so instead of writing such rubbish that shows you do not infact have a single clue about cars?

Just because a Japanese car maker conducted the largest safety recall over terrible build quality in recent times, I am not going to say the entire history and all future prospects of that company is null and void in relevance to being able to produce good cars. I am in fact referring to Toyota, one of those manufacturers you are pumping up, who happened to recall over an insane amount of vehicles because the breaks weren't working.

I had a Corsa and guess what? It lasted longer than a Merc owned on my road and never had a recall due to bad build quality for which the Merc was recalled for regarding cheap and nasty wheel bearings that could lead to the wheels falling off as it would shatter the entire wheel assembly. Are all mercs death traps because of this? No.

The attitude displayed in your post just means I do not have to take anything you say regarding cars seriously because you post with biased intentions and have no interest in accepting that Vauxhall here have created what some reviewers are saying is the new class leader. I can only imagine the thought of that infuriates you which is I find a little laughable. What would you suggest as a preference over this car? A Renault? It's a worthy comparison in terms of track lap speed, no doubt about that, but no where near a complete package and it's interior is vastly inferior to the Astra's. It also doesn't carry enough technology to compete with the everyday driving the Astra offers, unless you went and maxxed out the Meganne's available options at which point it puts on another 100kg's and the performance is then not what it says on the tin.

So, we are in discussion of the Hot Hatches... which would you choose? I know it is not the Astra, I just want to know what you would rather.

I'm not overly keen on the styling.

Perhaps it looks better in the flesh, or in a different colour, its a bit of a basking shark from the front dont we think?

Im not sure how "I'm not even that keen on Fords but I make a point of asking for one instead of a Vauxhall" constitutes me mentioning Ford as if the are premium cars but w/e :P

So your saying Vauxhalls build quality is historically on par with BMW's? O.o

I haven't been warned because the was nothing I said that violated the sites rules, in fact it was a pretty good analogy, improving their cars doe not wipe Vauxhalls reputation.

I don't hate Vauxhall, if you read the post in context it is in reference to the topic of brand stigma and the new Astra/Insignia being miles apart from anything Vauxhall have previously produced (which is true).

Also I suggest you Google what a troll post is that way you won't make this mis-accusation again.

Ford once recalled a car that was found to explode if shunted from behind, and admitted they knew about it before it went on sale, it doesn't make all Fords death traps. One example of a design flaw is not the same as two decades of rubbish cars.

Actually I have accepted this, the new Astra is good (imo better than the current Focus) and the VXR looks great. Like I said my post was in reply to the topic of brand stigma and Vauxhall's horrific reputation.

So, we are in discussion of the Hot Hatches... which would you choose? I know it is not the Astra, I just want to know what you would rather.

I don't do hatchbacks, due to disability I cannot drive manual cars and hatchbacks don't usually come with an autobox and a decent engine. But if we are talking renting I would opt for the new model Astra.

Can we get back on topic now please?

Im not sure how "I'm not even that keen on Fords but I make a point of asking for one instead of a Vauxhall" constitutes me mentioning Ford as if the are premium cars but w/e :P

Because you were referring to interior quality during your post. In that case, 1+1 really does = 2. As if Ford interiors are better Vauxhalls, if anything, VX are pulling away from Ford in that department as they are trying to catch up with Renault whereas Ford is fairly stagnant even with their new Focus ST which you would expect to have a lot more polish as it is a £21k machine.

So your saying Vauxhalls build quality is historically on par with BMW's? O.o

I am saying a lot manufacturers have poor build quality on the interiors. Even the ones you think are premium, look beyond the plastics and start looking at the automatic window motors etc and you will see that BMWs are no different at all and their windows fail just as much as any other brand and thus, the underlying quality of the electrics etc is just the same which is sadly hidden by the Premium cars marketting departments. And don't forget that Beemers are just as prone to corrosion from salty air environments as the next car, the layer of zinc covering the frame is just as thick as the next car. The major difference is that Beemer owners tend to take greater care of their motor but the motor itself is just as vulnerable as any other on the road from the elements, BMW jump on their car owners own good work and claim it as a bonus for the build quality of products. Marketting at it's finest. A ford or vauxhall owner tend to care less when their car costs £2,000 second hand, strangely it is a form of repeating cycle that punishes the good Ford and Vauxhall owners who see the value of their car devalue very fast due to so called rust prone issues where in fact it is lazy owners who are only after a cheap runabout not properly washing and polishing their panels.

I haven't been warned because the was nothing I said that violated the sites rules, in fact it was a pretty good analogy, improving their cars doe not wipe Vauxhalls reputation.

I still think you are troll by the definition given by the dictionary on this matter, it is not a mis-accusation. It is a terribly ill-concieved analogy at the very best, completely distasteful and offensive to the victims and car enthusiast's at worst. And in any case, you are comparing individuals with non-individuals. If you had to then you could only compare those monsters with a certain spec'd model, not the umbrella company but again, it would be distasteful.

Ford once recalled a car that was found to explode if shunted from behind, and admitted they knew about it before it went on sale, it doesn't make all Fords death traps. One example of a design flaw is not the same as two decades of rubbish cars.

This is what I was saying quite clearly so you are only proving my point all the more. But it begs the question why are current Vauxhall's being stigmatised by you because of their past cars? You can't make a rule for one manufacturer and then another rule for another car manufacturer as shown by this and your previous post.

Actually I have accepted this, the new Astra is good (imo better than the current Focus) and the VXR looks great. Like I said my post was in reply to the topic of brand stigma and Vauxhall's horrific reputation.

Refer to my embolded reply above. But Vauxhall's reputation is not strictly horrific, there near past history is pretty bad, but before that they were a popular and respected brand for the UK population before our car industry imploded and at the same time GM did that thing they like to do... 'standardisation'.

I don't do hatchbacks, due to disability I cannot drive manual cars and hatchbacks don't usually come with an autobox and a decent engine. But if we are talking renting I would opt for the new model Astra.

A welcome change of tune there. But for the record we went off topic as soon as the thread brought up the company's past instead of talking solely about the car at hand. I am happy to go back to talking about the Astra VXR, and comparing it to it's rival competitors if need be. I just hate badge snobbery because it is an indication of that people do not know about cars.

project VRD, you are clearly biased. I'd drop the attitude and leave the moderating to the mods before earmarking posters as "trolls".

Thankyou.
