New BMI Calculation :D

It is not terrible for a vast majority of people, it is is a good quick approximate for average people. For the tiny minority of people that have large muscle masses then the BMI will give a high reading, which is correct. The problem only arises from poor interpretation of the results. A high BMI doesn't directly equate to high body fat, but it does directly relate to a high body mass for your height which is exactly what it aims to measure .

From my personal point of view it is terrible, a perfect example is it being suggested as a way of saying "hey you're obese - sort it out" by the NHS to get out of providing particular services, it gives you a suggestion in the future it may get abused in that way. May sound a little extreme but that's what puts me off it, as you say, interpretation counts hugely - I don't think its a tiny minority of people and so it doesn't make it a very effective system!

Your personal view is irrelevant, it's effective because it was designed as an approximation. If you want something more accurate and meaningful then go get something like a body fat percentage test done. The trouble with everyone saying "Oh BMI is rubbish, blah blah blah" is that they expect something magical from a simple calculation.

A good parallel is physics. GCSE physics requires one to use an approximation of the acceleration of free-fall, to be 10m/s^2. This is fine, for that level of physics nothing more is needed. A-level physics requires a closer approximation of 9.81m/s^2. This doesn't make the former incorrect as it's performing its intended function as an approximation.

6ft and 18st BMI of 33 with the new system and still classed as over weight, If I want to be in the "normal" area I would need to loose 5st! Stupid BMI system has massive flaws!

yeah you do, the old muscle is heavy BMI is rubbish is just an excuse for fatties to say they are ripped

If I was 10% bodyfat, which is pretty ripped i'd say, Id still have a bmi of 34.7.

So you are talking crap tbh.
