Hello!

Long time reader, first time poster, looknig for some help. I used to be quite up on overclocking and custom PC's

but have dropped out of it for a while and now feel the urge again!

Current system -

Q6600 overclocked to 3.0GHz
4GB (2x2GB) Geil Black Dragon RAM running at stock (I think)
512MB NVidia Geforce 8800GTS (forget the manufacturer)
MSI P35 Neo Combo m/board
700w Thermaltake Toughpower PSU
250GB Maxtor Diamondmax HDD
24" Dell S2409W monitor

I'm looking at the i7 920 and X55 boards (mainly for "future-proofing") but am wondering what sort of PSu I might need (will be looking to go for DX11 cards, possibly 2, not sure but probably not until February/March next year) or what a good HDD would be (fast access etc).

This'll be a gaming computer running games such as Crysis and Crysis 2, Unreal 3 etc.

This is probably an overkill system but I'm a bit like that! Budget for EVERYTHING will probably be £1,000. Alas, I have no idea what boards, HDD's and PSU's to get - I'm that out of touch!

Appreciate any help you can give to this fallen overclocker!

i'm sure i've probs missed something out

I'd say keep your main system, youre not going to see a massive improvement changing to i7, drop in a new gfx card yeah, and a new hdd, other than that there isnt really anything that would benefit, imo

Is the Q6600 still that good a processor ? Shows HOW out of touch I am!

How much life do you guys think it has left in it before an upgrade is worthwhile ?

personally i'd get a 5850 and overclock it to the max along with a samsung F3 500gb HDD , dont upgrade completely as you wont see a massive improvement for the money ur spending (the Q6600 is still very credible)

Thanks for all the sound advice - I'm definately going to take this on board!

Is it worth getting a DX11 card now or would it be best to wait a little longer ?

I reckon you're looking at a good 6 months plus before any noticable price drops, just my opinion mind, you would see a boost in a new gfx card but depends on what you want to do really

Gaming at 1900x1280 (or whatever the max res is), as much settings as possible slapped to max.

Would DDR3 be a consideration as well ?

Sorry for all the questions! Your help has been great so far :)

vat goes back up after christmas so i'd get one now :)

5970 would be a huge upgrade but is very expensive, if you can find a 5850 or 2 in stock somewhere then get that otherwise i'd go for the 5970 as 57-- cards aren't powerful enough to really use dx11 features

yep, get a better GPU and if you still want to spend money, you could get an SSD or wait til the prices go down a little bit
