New Build but Really Not Sure about CPU MOBO

Hello,

So I have my annual bonus looming and have comitted £500 to my first build.

I dont require that many components as I have a recent HELL E521 which I will strip HDD, DVD, RAM, CARD READER & graphics card (8600 GT) from.

Ive ALMOST made my mind up on the following;

Abit IP35-E (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard Abit IP35-E (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (£76.36)

Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.33GHz (1333FSB) - Retail Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.33GHz (1333FSB) - Retail (£117.49)

Hiper HPU-4M580 580W ATX2.2 PSU - Black (£52.86)

Antec Nine Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case (£64.61

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 64-Bit Edition DVD - OEM - 1Pk (66I-00788) £70.49

So my question is quite simple, will the combination of MOBO/CPU allow me to do some half decent overclocking?

If the answer to the question above is yes then by how much?

Really appreciate any comments!

Thanks
S

I'm not sure about the newer Hiper PSU's but the old ones explode a lot :D
I would switch to the Corsair 520W just to feel safe.

Check ALL your hardware for Vista 64 driver support before buying that OS or you may have no end of problems.

The CPU/Mobo will OC well although I would invest in a CPU Cooler if your going to be OCing.

The PC came with a Big 64bit Compatiable sticker would you suggest checking all the componants anyway?

So lets say I got the cooler aswell how much do you think a novice could overclock without killing the PC?

From what you posted I understood that you were building it yourself, didn't know it was a pre-built. I would still check things like printers, scanners etc if you have any.

I would say you could OC it easily enough without blowing it up :D Good stickies in the Overclocking forum.

Confusion all round I guess. I am building myself. When you said check that your componants are 64 compatable I though you were refering to the HELL (and the bits and bobs I was taking out of that)

Hmm. Should be able to get a good overclock then. Im happy. Cant wait untill the price drop and maybe I can upgrade some more!!!!

Ditch the hyper, if you're overclocking an e2160 will do fine, a P35 motherboard (successor to the P965) would be the way I would go for future upgrading. Something like a GB DS3 P35 or a Asus P5K.

Hi,

reason I was going for the that particular CPU was becuase of the FSB, does the FSB of the CPU not really matter???

S

It can be changed very easily, hence overclocking :)

Basically although different CPUs have their 'rated' FSBs, they will go much higher. The things that will limit your overclock are the nature of the chip (aside from batch numbers and rumours, pretty random) and the mulitplier on the chip, which determines how many times faster than the FSB the chip will run.

e.g. e6550. FSB(333) * Multi(7) = 2.331GHz
e2160. FSB(200) * Multi(9) = 1.800GHz

However...

go into the BIOS and change the FSB incrementally from 200 to 333:-

e2160. FSB(333) * Multi(9) ~ 3GHz + a little heat increase ;)

Thanks Again. A couple more questions if your up for it.

I dont mind spending a fair amount on the CPU so would my original choice OC better than e2160?

Anyway to tell what chip/batch etc your getting before you buy?

How many times have you answered questions like this before?

Thanks

Depends what you do with the PC you're going to build. If you're going to play games, I say go for it as it will have 90-95% the speed of a more expensive chip for less money. Meaning you can spend more on a graphics card, which really affects the speed of games.

Given you're on a budget, I'd say going for a cheap chip with a high multiplier (like the e2160) was a no brainer.

You can e-mail gibbo (he may not tell you though) or you can return the chip as unwanted (but you'll have to pay the postage). Personally I would go with the consensus of majority to statistically enhance the chances of getting a good clocker. It seems that the e2160, e4300 and e6600 chips all, generally, seem to be clocking well and getting to 3GHz min. Have a look in the CPU forum at the 'official' threads easyrider has set up to gauge user experiences on the chips.

More than some, not as often as others. Happy to help :)

No problem. Make sure you partner it with a good P35 motherboard from Asus or Gigabyte and you'll be a 3GHz no problem. Also get some PC6400 RAM (or faster) so that won't hold you back.

And post your OCing results! :D

Given the way that reviews are censored, gibbo can be seen as a poof, as opposed to a wise guy or any other gangster related crap.

May have had a good day but sorry nothing but a blown up effigy living off the days when oc offered good hardware at low prices.

GIBBO sort it out you MOLL

Sorry Dude but I dont get your angle especially in this thread.

Could you not start your own thread something along the lines off "I make nonsense statments that are unrelated to topic"

What board would you go for and what are the benefits over the ABIT board I had settled on?

I already have some 6400 Crucial stuff.

Cheers

So now your not in a good mood with me and it only took someone to slander your good name (cough)

Never mind you've called someone a "poof" what is that supposed to be offensive, being Gay? Do you have a problem with other groups of people, please tell, im sure the other forum members of OC would be very intrested!

Anyway hope you have a lovely day.

I take the nice day back just re-read your post and noticed you also dont like "spaz"'s is that what I am?
