New build from OCUK - not happy

So i recieved my new PC today.

I ordered an I7 4790k, with 16gb of ram, a GTX970, in a Bitfenix Venom case.

I ordered a Corsair H80i water cooler as well.

Problems on arrival were:

2 fans not working, no led's on fans.
Corsair link cable not attached.
Fan missing. i've paid for it, but it doesn't exist.

Managed to get the fans to work (albeit one of them won't light up at all)
I connected the Corsair USB link cable, but i have no control over the RPM of my fans. I can see the speed in the BIOS, and in the Corsair Link software, but i cannot change it. I also have another cable left over, which seems to be a fan cable for the H80i fans, but no idea where to put it (thats what i paid Overclockers to do!)

Also there are no profiles in the Corsair link software, i hear of people choosing 'quiet mode' etc, i don't have these options.

Guess i'll ring them on Monday to complain.

Seriously, i'm not the most knowledgeable person with building pc's. But if i hadn't opened up the PC to have a look at what was connected and what wasn't, i would have a fried i7 chip by now.

Brilliant.

So, any idea how to lower the RPM of my fans? 2400 is too loud
 
I have managed to find out what the spare cable is.

You are supposed to plug each fan into the cable, and then run it into the top of the H80, which takes over control of the fan.

The fans came plugged into the motherboard, which is apparently wrong.

Again, this wasn't my job to work out. I can't believe whoever built it had never fitted a Corsair H80 before.

I'll take the radiator off tomorrow and fit it again, if nothing else this is valuable knowledge.

Just ran OCCT as well. The temps are hitting 78c after a minute. So i guess i need to reseat the cooler with new paste. Another thing thats wrong.

The corsair link cable is only there to give you direct control over the fans attached to the pump and /or allow you to update or change settings on it. The pump speed is not adjustable so unless you've got the fans plugged into the pump or you want to see the pump speeds and coolant temp then the lead is useless.

The fans can be plugged into either the motherboard or pump, it depends on the set up you require. For an easy install that requires no fiddling then I would use the pump as a place to plug the fans into as the pump will use preset profiles to cool the coolant. It's strictly wrong.

You seem to have worked out how to plug the cables and fans into the pump, this should give you fan profiles to select. I'd suggest working out your own profiles to suite your needs best.

I have a H100i so I know how it all works and I've had both mobo and pumpe connected fans, I settled for pump fans as it's easier to control. My mobo has a terrible temp reading ability for the CPU.

78 is high but not dangerous, you might just need to run your fans at a higher speed and ensure you're getting good cold airflow into the case.

Thanks. I will do.

I'll connect the fans to the h80 today.

As mentioned. Even with the fans connected to the motherboard I have no control over the rpm. Quiet mode does nothing and the fans are at a constant 2400rpm, too loud for music recording.
 
So i connected the fans using the Y cable to the H80i

I now have full control of the fans. Although running at full speed on an OCCT stress test, i'm hitting 80c after two minutes (running at 4.4ghz, 1.2v) Not too good.

20 minutes of Crysis 2 is getting me over 70c

Front fan still has no lighting

Still missing a fan.

I;ve posted this in tyhe customer service section. Would imagine it'll be monday before they respond (which is fine)
 
Hopefully they will remedy the problem and compensate you for the trouble. OcUK's customer support is generally praiseworthy.

Just call them and send it back so they can sort it out for you. Don't bother fiddling with it as something might go wrong and that way you can only blame yourself...
 
What system are you running?

Corsair link won't have control over the fans from it's GUI if the fans are plugged into the mobo.

You can use 3rd party software or the BIOS to control the fans if they are plugged into the mobo. Depending on its make you may have the mobo manufacturers software that can control the fans; for Asus it's Fan Xpert.

3rd party software like Speedfan gives good control.

I'd leave the fans plugged into the pump as it'll be easier and safer as the pump can control the fans according to the coolant temp.

Running at 4.4GHz on a stress test will challenge any CPU cooler and depending on what processor you have will depend on what stress test temps you should see. Your temps may be normal for the system you have. Do they stay around 70/80 or continue to rise until you stop the the because you get uncomfortable with the temps. I know you may not want to touch the system as you want OCUK to sort it, but ensure you have good airflow into and out of the system. A good rule of thumb is to ensure you have at least the same air going in as you have going out, most people like to adopt a positive pressure stance.

The lighting may be something to do with either the leads, broken LEDs or you haven't pressed a button somewhere on the case.

Update,

I've sorted all the fans now.

Plugged them into the Pump, control is fine.

Sorted the lighting out. They hadn't plugged two of the cables in, and they were hidden in the wires. I snipped a cable tie and there they were.

CPU is a 4790k, so 4.4 is standard speeds on a closed loop water cooler.

Just the missing fan now.
 
Oh great not another build quality issue. I bought a brand new factory Built car last year and have been chasing up problems ever since. Its needed to be in the work shop at my local dealers fifteen times. Parts replaced due to faults, a part that kept falling off, dash board removed and fitted right and roof console refitted right, various interior panels removed for rattles. Brand new F56 MINI. Shocking build quality. Already looking at Audi's ten months after picking it up just to get it out my life.


So I hope I don’t have issues when I order my PC from here later in the year I’ve had enough of things put together half arsed. I wish you luck getting it all fixed. I tend to think OC do things right so I’m sure they will get it sorted.

Not entirely sure what you're expecting. It's silicon lottery and the new chips are not known for their thermal capabilities. 70c isn't an issue and you'd struggle to get anything more with air/AIO cooling - a custom loop would allow a better overclock!

I think you're probably right.

At the moment I'm happy enough.

I think I just had initial disappointment because I have been so looking forward to it. And when nothing worked I was annoyed.

Perhaps I do have unrealistic expectations for the h80i but in most cases people are reporting hi 60's when stress testing.

I guess the moral of the story is. Don't stress test. It'll stress you out and test your patience.
 
I don't know how to the temps differ between the 4690k and the 4790k but i had a H55 with on a 4.6Ghz and 1.25v and during stress tests it maxed at 78 after an hour... although i took it off as my air cooler is better, despite not looking so good
 
80c in a stress test is nothing to be concerned about I bet your gaming temps will be in the 70 area and thats totally acceptable

sounds like the pump and fans were being powered fine albeit not to your liking when the system was delivered so no you wouldn't of fried anything that being said if your unhappy talk to OCUK and they will sort you out

The h80i is good but the new intel cpus are hot little things

80c in a stress test on a 4.4ghz processor with only a H80i is pretty good. #
You've only 120mm worth of rad space for coolant cooling.. A 240mm or 280mm rad AIO would be far better but it'll keep it away from its max TDP.

Also you might want to check your fans are 3 pin or 4 pin, 4 pin are PWM, 3 pin required volt stepdown to limit the max rpm.

Also to back it up, OC UK customer service is frankly 10/10. I've had to RMA 4 products and everytime OCUK was amazing.

I think my main concern was that two of the fans were not actually connected to anything.

But the upside is that I have gone from not understanding a motherboard to knowing my way around one in a weekend.

I guess that's free training!

Sorry to hear you're having problems.

My advice would be to stop tinkering and let the technical team advise you further on Monday.

The H80i wasn't recalled as mentioned above. That was their newer cooler and isn't related.

The reason that we dont install cooler fans and pumps into the cooler is because by attaching them to the board, they are controlled at BIOS level. If we do it via software, you lose the settings should you need to reinstall windows etc. It just ensures a constant and removes variables.

As for the temperature, its probably about right. The AIO liquid coolers do an ok job but really, they are average at best and dealing with the high thermal output of an OCd i7 CPU running a programming designed to load all threads and memory, its not going to be running cool.

Someone will get you an update on Monday and answer the rest of your questions, hope I've answered some of them anyway.
