New build garden options

Hi all, I've been in my new build house for about 18 months now. The lawn was fine last year, but has died off over winter. In the corners now it's just mud/clay and is very spongy to walk on. There's also a few cracks in the ground around the garden. I'm not a huge garden lover, however I do enjoy mowing the lawn and looking out of the window and having something to be proud of.

Pics in post six.

I have put seeds down but the ground is so hard on the surface and boggy underneath it's hard to rake them in. So I got a local gardening company who have been recommended by a neighbor to come in and give me a quote. I asked for the patio to be extended to 3m from the house, a foundation for a 6 by 4 shed and to level the garden as it slopes towards the back.

The guy explained to me that the only proper way of doing it is to dig out the clay and replace it with proper soil and put in soakaways. He said they have dug up bikes, shoes, rubbish and general tools left over from the builders in other gardens. He's done a lot of work in my new build area and says that other companies won't quote as they know the work that's involved and most don't have a mini digger to do the job.

The quote to dig up the entire lot with a digger, replace with fertilized soil, the foundation, nicer stone for the patio, and a 15 year guarantee for the grass was £2500. Just wondering if I should just lump it and get it done or if there's any realistic chance I can get it to grow myself.

Having never had any garden work done, I wasn't sure on the price. Here's the pics of the current garden, since work internet doesn't like uploading it seems. I can't get any other companies to quote, they either say they're too busy or just never turn up. This is the first company that have bothered to turn up! They have done a fair few properties on my new build estate.

Photo's aren't the best as it was bright sunlight.

We live in a new build with clay soil and rocks etc buried in there. Our lawn was laid about 7 years ago, it is kind of OK some of the time but not really anything to be proud of, during winter it gets quite boggy and there's a fair patch of moss.

Quite a few in the area have laid artificial grass because of the problems. Our neighbours for example had it returfed but it all died out over winter.

I've just had my two year old turf resurfaced in a New Build. You only need to go 15cm deep to find rock after rock. I planted seven small Buxor hedges and filled a bucket with rocks ranging from 5cm wide to 10cm wide (half bricks!).

Who put up the fencing? I would be getting them back and doing a proper job...that is terrible! Seriously how has that been signed off and accepted?

Interesting on the grass problem as I am having exactly the same problem and having it out with the builder to try and get them to sort it out, we paid for it as an extra but we have issues of it dying in places and also very boggy when wet.

The £2500 sounds very reasonable, for the sake of potentially saving £500 (which I think is highly unlikely) I would go with recommendation over going to possible cowboys doing it and costing you double again in a few years time.

Well the fencing issue has been caused by the ground drying out and cracking, then getting soggy when it rains, over and over again.

Mine wasn't paid for as an extra, I bought the house with it all configured. I doubt I'd get anywhere trying to get the developer to sort it out, and if they do it'll only be a bodge job to last another year to take it out of warranty.

EDIT. Just spoke to him, roughly 100 sq m.

100m2 doesn't seem right. From the pics thats 3 panels wide and may be 4 panels long. Standard width for a panel is 1.83m
5.49x7.32 = 40.18ish m2. Happy to be proved wrong, my maths is far from good :)

In any case that is pretty cheap. Assuming he's putting in soil to a depth of 150mm for example thats about 7 bags of soil (9 tonne bags minus say 2 for the area of the shed base) each of those is going to be at least £100.

You could save some cash if you wanted/could be bothered by seeding it yourself, would only take a day.

No gravel boards?

Surely those fences aren't going to last long just lay directly on the ground.

It's with gravel boards.

I don't know, I did think 100 seemed large but I didn't bother to question him. I told him today I want it doing. I'll post progress pics.

How is he getting a digger in there?

2 foot wide mini digger, only company in the area with one.

Tuesday.

It's started.

Very happy so far. Getting them to do the front of the house as well.

And the done deal, taken tonight. Will get some better pics once the dust has been cleaned up.

I also got them to do the front of the house. I did think about doing it myself but in reality it would never get done and I hate weeding!

Again it's a bit dusty at the front.

For that size I would have gone plastic grass tbh, another 2 years and Mr Moss will be back in the corners.

Excellent work. To be honest though that grass is not going to stay like that!!

We had a new build 20+ years ago and the subsoil was terrible!! Always the same on these new build sites.

It was another £1700 or so for decent astro turf!

Nice result  Shame to lose a bit of green at the front though.

I don't mind, as I am too lazy to manage it myself.

I have a guarantee on it.
