New Build Help Appreciated

Hi All,

Looking to get into some pc gaming in the very near future and am looking for some advise.

I have already bought the ram and local memory as it was on a good sale on amazon. In hindsight I should have probably did a bit more research on the ram to make sure it was sufficient for what I needed.

As for my budget, for the pc alone I am looking at between €1000-€1500. I do not need the best of the best equipment, I am after a good value build which will play games. Of the games my intention is to play pubg, preferably at a high res (1440) and high frames (144), so please consider this when given advice.

I have been reading a couple of builds, searching forums, comparing parts and Ryzen CPU and 5700xt GPU have caught my eye with their bang for buck.

Ok, so this is what I have:
Ram: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 2x8gb 3000mhz
Memory: Corsair MP510 NVMe PCIe Gen3 M.2 SSD

What CPU, GPU, MBO, power supply and case would people recommend to achieve my goal?

An R5 3600 and MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX would be enough for that game. If you go with an RX 5700 XT don't get one like the above, go with an AIB version. Also no need for a 750W psu when a 550W is more than fine.

So something like this:

I don’t mind oversizing the PSU a little for future provision if the cost is not significant.

What’s the benefits of the gigabyte over Powercolor / AIB?

When I add this to my pc parts checker, I get the below warning, what does this actually mean to me?

In terms of coolers, what would you recommend? I sometimes see the Ryzen 5 paired with a air cooler on amazon, or would a water cooler?

In terms of actually check what performance I will get from my setup / the requirements of pubg, is there a site which will give me an idea what resolution and frequency I will get?

Realistically... is it better to pay the extra £70 for the cheapest gigabyte x570 board over the tomahawk?

The SuperFlower Leadex 650W is an extra £10 if you want a bit of headroom. The Bitfenix Formula in the other build is also fine, but that has all fixed cables so cable management isn't quite as good.

The Gigabyte one has a better cooler and also UK warranty. You also have a forum rep (GIGA-Man) who posts on here. There are other ones like the Sapphire Pulse and Powercolor Red Devil but they don't have UK warranty support. As you stated your budget is in Euros then maybe not so important if you are in Europe etc.

The B450 chipset doesn't support the 3000 series out of the box so they need an up to date bios. The Tomahawk MAX is a revised version of the Tomahawk so it should work from the off. It does have bios flashback though should you need it (Update bios without cpu).

A cheap cooler like the Arctic Freezer 34 esports duo is an upgrade over the stock one for around £30. It will certainly run cooler/quieter than the AMD one although the stock cooler is 'OK' for the most part.


The 5700 XT is a solid card for 1080p and 1440p. Not sure about that particular game, but the review below of the Sapphire Red Devil will give you an idea on other titles.

That’s good because I seen some forums where you needed an old CPU to allow you to update where I wouldn’t have this as been my first build!

I see ******** have the gpu back in stock the 4th of September and at £420 looks the cheapest around. This is the same one correct?

I was looking at the Corsair PSU, it’s a known brand to me so would be comfortable considering.

Regarding the motherboards mentioned in the different comments above, what are the main differences? Regarding future proofing is there anything to consider? Thanks.

future proofing. x570/b550 when release normally get better bios support and board design are better . MSI i liked only has dual slot ram slots but you'll find dual slot boards are the best for overclocking - if thats your thing .

if you had the case and wanted it to work right out the bat then you'd go 570x board, but for the price only worth it with 3700x and above or you know you'll be packing 16+ cores in 2/3 years time 2nd hand maybe. also using crucial 3200hz ram clocked to 3600hz plus

You mean generate a basket of parts ? If so then you just add items on here to your basket and then click on BBCODE when you view your basket and copy/paste that into your post. If you don't mean that, then you might need to explain a bit better :D

There is a pc configurator but as you already have some parts it probably won't be much use to you.

Hi Lee,

On pc part checker, the Gigabyte Radeon rx 5700 xt gaming oc isn’t coming up as an option, i assume there is no compatibility issues with my other equipment in my last mail?

Also I know we spoke of this earlier but the bios update for the msi b450 tomahawk Max, this can be updated without any CPU?

How is this done and where do you get the update from?

A lot of the 5700 XT are still pre-order as they sell out pretty fast. If you want something that is in stock on here, then there is the Sapphire Pulse.

The MAX board should be compatible out of the box, so I would do the build as normal and see if it boot ok. There is only one other bios update anyway at the moment for that board (And a beta which shouldn't be used).

This shows how to use bios flashback though should you need to.

 
I’ve most of my build done now, just waiting on the GPU this week.

Regarding monitors, any recommendations? What I have been told to go for was something with the following specs: 27”, 144hz, 1440p, 1ms response time, TN panel.

Is it worth getting a monitor with FreeSync?
