Hi all,

So late last night/early this morning I finished building my new gaming rig, specs as below:

i7 920 D0
Gigabyte UD5
6Gb Patriot Viper (3x2Gb)
Corsair HX 620
Antec 902 case
Asus GTX 275 Video Card
Seagate Barracude 500Gb HD
Pioneer DVD RW

I thought I'd power it on before I went to bed and make sure everything was OK......it wasn't!!

When I power the machine on, everything starts up for maybe a second or two (MB lights up, fans on, HD on, Vid Card on etc) then it imediately powers down for approx 5 seconds. It then tries to power up again for a couple of secs, then off again and gets stuck in this cycle until I switch the PSU off. The machine nevers posts and the MB shows code 88 (not sure whether this is the right error or it just shows this in the few seconds when it tries to start up). I have the machine connected to a monitor and keyboard/mouse plugged in.

I'm at work at the moment so haven't done anything else with it as yet but thought I'd post to see if anyone has any idea's of either what could be wrong or things to do to test it.

This is the first PC I've built and I'm a bit worried that I've done something wrong so any info is welcome.

Thanks

Chris

remove all the power connections *except* the two power connectors to the motherboard and the two power connectors to the graphics card and make sure everything is seated properly, especially the heatsink/fan on the cpu.

Thanks for this,

Should I clear the CMOS as well before re-starting or does the fact that I've never managed to get it to post means that the CMOS is irelevant at this stage?

Cheers

cpu HSF is either not seated correctly, or your paste application fails. Well, thats the first thing id check, try a cmos reset, try changing the ram slots.

Normally this is the bios/something turning the pc off due to overheating in my experience. Spose it could also be shorting/psu spiking causing it to shutdown to protect itself though.

Cheers for the responses,

I've installed the memory in the white slots (1, 3 and 5) as per the MB user manual. I'll be knocking off from work soon so can go home and put your suggestions to use :D

Thanks

OK I've tried the following so far with no joy,

  1. cleared CMOS and restarted
  2. disconnected everything apart from 2 MB power cables and 2 Vid card power cables, then restarted
  3. removed MB from case, connected 2 MB power cables and 2 Vid card power cables, then restarted

There has been no change so I'll try running with 1 stick of RAM next before I look at removing the CPU fan and re-seating with new thermal paste.

Cheers

I bet this is quite frustrating...Im amazed that it was only an afterthought to turn your PC to check after building the thing...Im not that patient, I definitely woulda planned to turn it on and mess around for a while before goin bed

i had this exact same problem when i purchased my p5q pro. exact same series of events. to fix the problem i physically removed the CMOS battery left it out for 10 mins and put it back in and everything was fine.

gd luck.

sorry edit to post didnt read thread fully my mistake.

sounds like a dodgy mobo if you have fully checked the seat between the hsf and cpu then that shouldnt be your problem.

does you mobo have a 2 x 4 cpu power connector (near the cpu itslef). 1 of the groups of four often has a cover over it and will fail to boot if only 1 group of four is in. Im guessing you have also put the main mobo power connector on?

1 stick of RAM didn't make any difference :(

Yes it has an 8pin cpu power connector as well as the 24 pin, they are both connected along with the 2 PCI power connectors on the vid card.

I'm going to check the hsf now as it's the last thing I can think of to look at....

edit: Should I try removing the CMOS battery first as you suggest or better to look at the hsf first?

have you tried just connecting the power to the mb with 1 stick ram, nothing else, leave the graphics card and drives, see if the mb posts?
basically just try it with nothing, then slowly add your parts. trial and error...

How will I know if the MB posts without the vid card being hooked upto a monitor? I don't have a speaker connected to listen for beeps so all I have is the lcd code display on the board

would like to see you getting this to post as ive just bought almost the same rig.tho im more patient imwaitin to next week to put it all together .

OK so I've removed, cleaned and re-seated the hsf and restarted with only 1 stick of RAM and no vid card as suggested.....still the same :(

Still just powers on for 1 sec and then off again and just cycles this behaviour until I kill the power.

Does this mean my MB has had it?

You probably already done this have you tried each memory module separately.

Have you let it power up and down 3 - 4 time's.

Some of the questions may seem daft but they have got to be asked and I can't think of anything else, I have the same board :(

I've tried each stick separately and in various slots and still no joy. I've also let it attempt to start 5 times on each go.

I'm running out of things to try now :( Has anyone got any other idea's?

Cheers

Just tried with a different PSU, 1 stick of RAM, no vid card, reseated CPU cooler etc as before and still the same issue. I've ruled our PSU, RAM, Vid Card, hsf so I can only think the MB has had it :(

Gutted!!!
