Hi

I have just built PC with following specs tonight

Gigabyte Z97X-UD5H-BK - Devil's Canyon Core
i7 4790K CPU
16GB DDR 3
EVGA SuperNova G2 1000W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply
SSD 512Gb

However it keeps restarting in Windows, anywhere from seconds to about 10 mins in.

I have tried reinstalling Windows, checked RAM, temps are about (50C-70C on stock cooler), cleared CMOS.

Any ideas what to try next?

Cheers

One thing I have found, it always crashes when I run 'Rate my PC' the thing in Windows that give you a system score

What stage, mem, disk, video processor?

Does same thing happen with 1 stick of RAM?
What GPU?
Is it on latest BIOS?

Just updated the Bios from v4 to v6 and temps are about 10C cooler, will see how this runs at the moment... Thanks for the advice, heres hoping that fixes it

I bet it's heat. When you're running the rate my PC thing it's loading up your processor and you are probably hitting thermal limit so the motherboard says "nope".

CPU is spinning, reseated it and dropped about 5C off temps.... May need to get a CPU cooler quicker.

Will re-check tonight, but seemed to be running a bit better after the Motherboard Upgrade.

Thanks all for your help, will keep you updated.

Edit] Sorry missed the key question, I took those temps idle out of Bios

Just do a quick test.

Stick your hand in the case on the heatsink when your in the bios. If the heatsink feels like the temps it's showing then you know it's a better heatsink and or a settings issue. If the heatsink is cold (60 celcius is hot water temp) then there is something else wrong.

I did find this bug.

Turn on your PC and boot into the bios. Once inside the bios, load optimized defaults. This will reset everything in the bios to stock. Next locate all the power saving features namely EIST, C1E, C3/C6 and DISABLE all these features. What this does is ensure that the CPU is running completely without any downclocking of the cpu multiplier or voltage. Once you have disabled all the power saving features, go into the VOLTAGE section of the bios and look next to the CPU CORE VOLTAGE or CPU VCORE. The setting should be at auto, but there should be a number to the left of the AUTO setting, 1.10v for example. This number is your CPUs VID and is a predetermined voltage set for your cpu.

Once you have done the above, proceed to boot into windows and open up cpuz, hwinfo and realtemp. Here you should be looking at your cpu temperatures and ensuring they are in the normal range, i.e not running at 50c with the cpu being at stock. Also please double check your cpu multiplier and cpu vcore in hwinfo/cpuz. This SHOULD be at 4.4Ghz, and the multipliers should be from 44 to 40. If the cpu vcore is showing at something like 1.4v, please go into the bios and double check the amount of cpu vcore, this is a bug on Z97 Gigabyte motherboards. This should be remedied by going to optimized defaults, or you can try to flash your motherboard to the latest bios from your manufacturer's website.

So that might be something to check up on. Or you may have a faulty sensor. If the heatsink feels hot then the above might be the answer.

Temps of 50c in bios shows something def not right there.

Check how fast the cpu fan is running in bios for a start. But even on the "quiet" setting temps should not be that high in bios even with stock cooler.

Whats the cpu temp shutdown temp set at in bios?

After removing the cpu cooler have you been cleaning off the thermal paste with isopropanol and renewing it?

Also is paste getting spread evenly over the surface of the cpu?

the bios that ships with the board will use more cpu voltage than needed and overvolt the cpu,so its good you flashed to latest bios, that will use less cpu voltage and lower temps
