Try connecting monitor to the vga port built into motherboard. Try it with or without graphics card and see if you get a signal. BIOS might be configured to look for on board graphics for it's first setup rather than the graphics card.
i unplugged the graphics card and it worked! my screen is asking for a boot device. finally. i'll probably be back to ask how to get my graphics card to work.
