I have a friend that has a £300 budget for a new build (surfing, gaming) and the job of assembling it has fallen to me. While i am looking forward to it i have to admit its been a while since i have done one, maybe 18 months .
I really don't know what's getting the reviews these days so i will post what i feel would be good and then you can all have fun picking it to bits :D .

Sound card, G card (HIS 3870), Monitor, mouse + keyboard have already been sourced.

Is anyone still fitting a floppy for backup?

That's around £300, i wouldn't mind saving some money as he is going to need an operation system aswell, i was thinking windows 7 but i am not sure what its like with games that are a few years old aswell as recent releases.

Cooler Master GX 650W Power Supply - £49.98
Mediocre design with Chinese crap capacitors

Thanks stulid, nice case and a bargain with the PSU fitted.
There's reason why it's cheap: because it's best used as paper weight.

"Elite Power" bundle PSUs are overspecced cheap China capacitor low end junk designed for web browsing/word processing PC and counting their survival (not cooking up too fast) to being in bottom of the case.

Esat, why do you **** it off then link to a review which says it does well? Also that review is the 400W not 500W but I suppose we can assume they're not too different

Conclusions
Although with performance not comparable to more expensive models, Elite Power 400 W can really deliver its labeled wattage (in fact we could pull up to 420 W from it), provides an outstanding voltage regulation, it is very inexpensive and won’t damage your computer

'But since it didn’t show efficiency above 80% all the times and noise and ripple levels were very high (touching the 120 mV limit on +12 V output when we pulled 400 W from it), we can’t recommend it.'

Yes but imo theyre talking about it as a stand alone PSU which you purchase seperately, it does not claim to have 80+ efficiency, and whilst the noise/ripple may be high theyre acceptable as they said if you read the full review, passed both these tests, so whilst you may not recomend someone to select this from a choice of similar psu's on the shelf, as it comes with the case at an effective cost of £25, you find me a better PSU for £25

Yeah I would go with a +1 for this product info too. Seem to go with the OP bugdet nicely. Good scouting.
