Just built a pc for my uncle. I've got the seagate barracuda 7200.10 hard drive but it's not being recognised on boot up. It hasn't got the normal power splitter 4 pin style. It's a slim line adapter, which is hooked from the PSU, to the DVD drive to the HDD. What's the reason it's not being recognised?

Right, I tried again. There's power to the HD and it shows up in the BIOS as recognised (SATA1, the DVD drive is SATA2).
When I try to get it to install windows, it just has a small section about the motherboard, then underneath it says "Not Found Any Disk". Afterthat, there's just a blinking line top left of the screen. I can't get it past that.

I just got this reply:

"The drive is probably not faulty Sir and just need initialising, you
can do this either in windows, if this is a secondary drive...or, if this
is the primary boot drive...by formatting the disk through the
installer of the operating system you wish to use. (you will need to boot from the install CD first)"

What the hell do I do?

You need to go to the disc drive manufacturers website and download their disc installation software, either Seagate disk wizard (unfortunately thats 112megs) or I suspect that maxblast will work as Maxtor are a part of seagate now.
Install the program on another working pc and create a bootable floppy with the software then after installing your disc in the new pc start the new pc with the bootdisk in the floppy (set boot order in bios to 1st boot device = floppy)
When the program loads you will be able to use it to initialize and format your new disc.
I bet your gonna tell me the new pc doesn't have a floppy drive now :D

No because the program runs in Dos which is loaded from the floppy. Until you've loaded Dos you'd have no cd drivers.
Does your other pc have sata ports? If it has just connect up the new drive and initialize and format it through windows (I'm assuming it's winXP).
Start/Control Panel/Adminstrative Tools/Computer Management/Storage/Disk Management/
Right click on your new disk and initialize it. When that's done right click again and format it. Put it back in the new pc and install your o/s.

EDIT;
Actually looking at Seagate Disk Wizard there is an option to make a bootable cd :) There you go.

You should be able to although you'll have to modify your boot.ini file after your done because the WinXP setup will change it so you can dual boot between either of the OS installs.

Just a note of caution though, I've had issues with XP in the past if the hardware changes significantly, where it won't boot or just has lots of running problems.

I just can't get the hard drive to install windows XP on my uncles machine. I tried making a bootable cd with the seagate sata controller drivers on, it started, but then said i needed a seagate or maxtor in order to continue!

The Asus M2V motherboard only came with one SATA II lead so i've borrowed one from my old asus motherboard, although i think that was SATA I. My DS3 uses SATA II so would that make a difference?

Have you tried giving WinXP the drivers for the SATA controller in the initial setup ?

When you boot from the WinXP CD it will ask you to press F6 to load additional drivers. If you put the drivers for the new motherboard's sata controller on either a floppy disk or USB Key, you should be able to get windows to detect it.

What motherboard is the new one in your uncles PC ?

Just had a look on the Asus website and it doesnt mention anything about drivers needed for this. I'd still have a look on the driver CD's that cam with it and see if theres any mention of sata drivers for it. If that doesnt work then you probably are looking at installing it on your computer.

I thought you said in the first post that you wanted to install a Seagate 7200.10? Did you try downloading the Seagate Disk Wizard and create a bootable cd with it?
7200'10's come with a tiny jumper fitted that limits them to sata1 so that they'll be recognised by any sata board. To get sata2 speeds you need to remove the jumper, but first you need to get the drive initialized and formatted before thinking about that.

OK i got it going. Now i've got a new problem. When you set up windows, you set up keyboard language and it resizes the screen, after that you get to name who will use the computer. I put my uncles name and clicked next. Now i'm at the screen where i need to enter a password. Which is weird because i never set one up. It says contact the administrator. Im using the same windows disk as the one i have on my computer, and the one before that. Is this the problem?

Pretty sure you cant get through the installation process without setting up a password. If you did really not specify a password just try clicking next without entering anything in the box but as I say I'm sure you cant get past the password page during install without putting one in.

Well as I said you must enter a password during the installation process or you cant proceed same as you must name the computer to identify it on a network. So what might you have put there then? Uncles name? Computer name? Your name?.......LOL....have a guess
