New build problems!

Are you installling from Genuine windows discs or ones you`ve burned yourself?

*Cough* burned myself *cough*.

I'm a naughty boy, I know. This shouldn't make a difference, at least not to the install stage. Worked perfectly well on a different computer.

Does this honestly sound like a knackered mobo?

I always thought kaput motherboards wouldn't even boot.

So theres the possibility of it being a bad burn, rubbish quality disk, did you buy them from ASDA?

Wouldn't say so.

I installed Windows XP w/ SP1 on my MacBook perfectly fine. I haven't used the Windows 7 burns before but on my girlfriends 3 year old Laptop it manages to get to the select language window from boot perfectly fine. Mine doesn't.

Oops, nearly forgot.

When I first built the computer, it did manage to get to the pick a language screen but I had to cancel as I didn't have time to continue. Ever since, it hasn't worked.

Trying to reset the CMOS now, see if that makes a difference.

The reason i ask is i had the same problem yesterday. Tried to do a clean install, with a new LG optical drive, using a copy i made on another drive. You can either try burning a new copy with new drive or rig the old one up and install from there.

shot in the dark but have you tried re formatting the hdd. if you did a small part of the install there may be files on there it's not expecting?

I'll try burning a copy via my girlfriends Windows based laptop.

It isn't the optical drive as I bought a new one today, same problem. Does this sound like a borked motherboard? Or simply something disabled / enabled in bios, causing problems.

I wouldn't rule out a bad disk.

I've had install problems in the past. It was a combination of things, so don't blame the mobo just yet.

How long have you waited at that screen?

Is the keyboard responding?

You tried opening and closing the drive again?

You tried the SATA ports in other configurations (AHCI / IDE)?

You tried booting from optical without the hard drive?

You tried booting from USB?

You tried swearing at the screen?

1. The computer automatically restarts after about 1-2 minutes.

2. Keyboard doesn't respond as the computer has froze?

3. No, i'll give that a try.

4. Yes, Windows XP stopped with the message "no hdd detected" and Windows 7 crashed at the usual spot.

5. I only have an iPod Nano / External HDD, would it be possible to use one of those?

6. Yes, over and over and over and over and over again.

I only have an external usb hard-drive and iPod Nano, don't think either of them will work.

No neither of those are any good. Pity.

Have you tried reseating all the cables, and clearing the CMOS. Then leave defaults (except time/date) and try a fresh install.

AStaley.
