Hello Guys/Gals I am having an issue with my new build. I can play for a few hours but sometimes it randomly shutdown as if the plug has been pulled but the motherboard light stays on. My specs are
Core i7 920 D0@stock settings
Mobo: Asus P6x58D-e
GPU: Gainward GTX 480@stock
PSU: Corsair HX1000
OCZ Gold RAM OCZ3G1600LV6GK timings 8-8-8-24 1600mhz
1TB Samsung Spinpoint harddrive
Samsung DVD drive
Case: Coolermaster HAF932
Zalman CNPS10X Extreme cooler
Windows 7 Home premium.
All the memory and cpu voltages are correct. This is my second build in 2 years so I have some experience. My temps on the CPU are between 41C idle and 67C Full Load. Mobo never goes over 37C. I have checked all the connections and everything is in place correctly. the only thing I found odd is that the 12v rail reports 11.911v in the bios and 11.12v in speedfan. The mobo is on the gold rivets and their is no grounding issues. Looking for some people to shed some light on what it might be.

Regards CrimsonBlade

Thank you for the reply. It happended 5 times in the last week so I dont think its a random glitch, although u never know. I have been testing it for awhile it is a beast of machine maxes every game I throw at it :) These random shutdowns sometimes have corrupted my CMOS and it needs to be reset. DRAM light by the MemOK! button stays red otherwise. yesterday it failed to boot up at all until I reset the CMOS. I think it is either a motherboard, psu or ram failure. I dont think it is the CPU because of no BSOD or error codes as I have had in the past due to overclocking or heat failures. PSU has been scheduled for an RMA so I may have an answer soon enough.

Have you tried the RAM sticks individually? Also, are you running them at 1.65V (or thereabouts)?

How are your GPU temps? You can use Furmark to run a stress test on it and monitor the temps.

But as you say, a faulty PSU does sound like an equally likely cause.

Is your CPU at a set core voltage or is it just on auto?

I have used EVGA precision to monitor my Temp on my GPU. 41C on idle and 81C Fan on 70%. Ram is running on 1.66v. CPU is at 1.28 voltage as sorry bout this I have overclocked the cpu 3.6GHZ but it still crashes on stock as I've stated. Ram seems to be running fine memtest86 ran for 2 hours and it was stable, besides I think if the Ram was causing it I would assume a BSOD. From my experience ram doesn't have a temerature mointor chip so it would run till it shorts out. It might be the cause of my system instability but the connectors are not burnt or melted so I don't think that is the suspect. I will download Furmark and try 3dMark Vantage and I'll get back to you.

I logged Furmark on Xtreme burning with 8xMSAA 1920x1080 Avg Fps 18 Min 17 Max 19. Temperature min 41C Max 79C Fan speed 70%. Nah its not a GPU issue my main suspicion is the power supply. It has been working fine for the last hour and a half. Finger crossed it will stay stable if not I will RMA the PSU and play it by year. Its not as if theres nothing to do until then with the footie on. I may be welsh but COME ON ENGLAND!!!

Perhaps your Corsair HX is dodgy? I had the same problem with my HX520 at one point (Not sure if theyre the same manufacturers though, the 520 is Seasonic based and the 750 &850 are CWT based), sent it back, got an RMA and it's rock solid again. Am still using it in my other rig

You checked that the Mobo battery is in properly? That may affect the Cmos settings.

After that, i'm not sure what may be wrong, but I wouldn't suspect the CPU or GPU, more likely to be RAM or MoBo.

When something shuts down like that, it sounds like an electrical short somewhere or the PSU protection kicking in.

If RAM and everything else checks out for stability, these kinds of problems are hard to track down.

Hello again. Sorry for bumping an old post. Just a quick update. The power supply was found out to be faulty and I will recieve a replacement by Tuesday. The only problem is that the old power supply partially scorched the grounding pin 3 of the 24pin atx socket of my motherboard:(. Under close examination the pin is fully straight and hasnt melted. I think the power supply was giving out too high a voltage which the grounding pin was overcompensating for causing the system to shutdown. My motherboard has no oversized capasitors so that wasnt causing too much voltage draw so it wasnt a motherboard problem. My question is will it be safe to use the new power supply with this partially scorched pin? The pin is only a tiny bit corroded due to excess heat and the plastic is just a little bit brown not melted. Thanks in advance.

Another HX PSU faulty My HX850 died but the surge protector caused that failure. There are many HX PSU failures being reported on the Corsir forums.

Scorched PIN OMFG You would have to have big balls to fire that up again. I would RMA the board or risk loosing a CPU, RAM etc, if you havn't already. I was fortunate to only loose one GFX card of 3 and suffer no further damage.

Thanks for replying. I have looked at the Corsair forums a lot for the last week, they may have a good rep but there must be terrible quality control where their manufactured. I only ever bought Antec PSUs in the past along with my 900. My mobo is still under warranty with OcUk so I will get in contact with them on Monday to get a replacement the scorch mark is right on pin 3 so looks like that pin may have just saved my other components. I bought the HX with another company who i cannot name without a *** but it begins with E and ends with buyer who mysteriously have stopped showing them on their webpage just hours after despatching a replacement, a bit coincidental if I might add. I am going to give them hell as my house could have gone up in flames if lightning had struck:mad:. I am going to get a refund as it could have put my or my families lives at risk. A bit of advice for anyone reading my thread don't buy HX PSUs they are a health and saftey hazard.
