Hi all, 2nd post here, first was about my build. Got the package this morning, it consists of quad core 965 amd, radeon hd 5850, g skill ripjawsx 8gb ram ddr3, corsair build 600w psu, asrock m3a770de amd motherboard and a hitachi deskstar 1tb stat hdd.

Ive assembled the rig and it seems to boot up just fine, but I lose picture about 30 seconds into whatever im doing. If im looking through the bios i lose picture and my screen goes to standby after about 30 seconds, same deal if im booting up the windows 7 installation cd.

This leads me to believe it is something to do with the graphics card, its definitely in the right pci-e slot as ive tripled checked it, and ive tried the other slot also. The card continues to run fine i think(the fan is running) but I lose picture!?

Anyone ever hear of anything like this? Is it likely Ive got a faulty card on my hands?

Might seem patronising but you sure your two PCI-E x6 Power cables are plugged in? I mean I'd expect it just not to start up, but who knows.

Thanks for the quick reply, yea those two are plugged in, a friend of mine just asked me the same thing :P Ive pluged them in a bunch of times to be sure, theyre fine :(

A friends just told me that I havent put any thermal paste between the processor and the heatsink, and that the processor could be overheating too fast and causing it, does this seem likely to be the problem?

it depends if your using the stock cooler it normally comes pre applied but if its after market then maybe you needed to :P

Did you use the heatsink supplied with the processor? And yeah it could be possible, but if you used the one supplied it comes with it on, if not then it could be possible.

yeh but surely it cant overheat in 30 secs and plus its only the monitor that goes into standby so could more than likely be the graphics card. I have an idea try integrated graphics and see if the same thing happens. If not then its the graphics card :)

I dont think there is integrated graphics since i dont see any vga slot or video slots :( and yea I used the fan/sink that came with the processor. Thanks for all the replies and help, really appreciate it!!

Sadly his motherboard doesn't have any kind of integrated graphics.

Do you know anyone else with a PCI-E card you could borrow to see if it's the card?

it really does sound like a problem with the card like silenced said do you have any access to another card? Might be worth trying that

Actually it can, i accidently forgot to put paste on my CPU once and couldnt figure out why it was turning off inbetween post and loading windows.

Apply paste THEN if theres a problem solve it.

Hi All... (first post...)

Sounds the same symptoms as a faulty inverter on the monitor if it is a flat panel monitor.
It looks similar to standby, but it is just the back light going off (although i have seen monitors that shut off too).
Maybe the PC is fine (i wouldn't think no heat-sink gel is good for the CPU. i would think you need this ASAP)
Can you try the monitor on any other pc?

The stock heatsink will have had paste already applied. That's not the problem. Plus overheating would shut down the whole system rather than just the screen.

Hey guys sorry for late response, went to sleep on it :P Yea im gonna pop my graphics card into my brothers pc later today when he gets home, and I think ill try jonnys idea too and test the rig out with a different screen. I might also put his graphics card into my rig and see how that works out for me. Thanks for all the replies and suggestions, will update when I have news!!!

Just an update incase anyone was wondering, tested the graphics card, ram and power supply on my brothers computer and theyre all good so its likely a motherboard thing, im exchanging emails with overclockers technical support now, once the problem is resolved ill post what was going on!

seems like the gpu could be faulty.

Hello

Did you try the monitor on your brothers PC too, as it really does sound like an inverter problem (i used to deal with graded monitors and this was a common problem - sometimes fixable with a little soldering, and other time not....)

Hope you solve your problem
