Over the last few day my parts for my new build have arrived:

Corsair XMS3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX8GX3M2A1600C9

Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard

Intel i5 - 2500k

Power is supplied by my existing OCZ eXtreme 600w PSU.

Today I put them all together and the thing won't power on. The fans all start VERY slowly and I can hear a very slight noise from inside somewhere, like a hum I suppose, also the phase LED bank, on the board, has the red light at the top of it on, although not at a constant brightness, almost flickering. However when I power it off with the PSU switch on rear, all fans spin up briefly and the phase LED's on the board all quickly flash.

So I removed the main power supply from the new board and plugged it back into my old board, whcih was still setup with the old E6750 in place, along with the power switch connections from the front panel, my original board and CPU were just sitting on the floor alongside my case with no memory or graphic card in place. So I powered this up and the board light illuminated instantly and the fan I connected kicked in too, along with the CPU fan. The HDD began to spin up too, so at this I powered it off again and reconnected the power cables etc to the new board again......still the same, won't kick in.

Does this sound like the new board maybe faulty or is there someone who could offer some other possibe fault before I go down that route. I don't know if to keep tinkering with things or admit defeat.

Any ideas ??

Does not sound good, is the 8 pin for CPU connects firmly in place.

Perhaps even try running external to the case.

@chigley - yeah I did, there are two blocks of four, which can't be inserted incorrectly.

RIC - I presume this is the same connector that chigley mentions ?

Just tried the above, still no joy. Now took graphic and sound cards out but still no change. Is it worth taking out the CPU and reinserting it ?

Might be worth it, and try runnig the motherboard external to the case, least you can say you have tried various options and permitations to say that the motherboard could be faulty :(

Do you mean try the board with another PSU when you say external ?
Just tried the CPU reseating with no joy.
:(

Could it be bending of the PIN's under the CPU?
Are all power connectors firmly in-place?
This is puzzling me, so what you are saying you applied the power-supply to your old build and it work fine but when you re-plug to your new build it just go ca-bomb? not liturally i just mean it does power up correctly.

I would recommend benching your unit, keep removing in/out of the case should be annoying...

Ok update on this, sorry I have been away for a few days.

It would appear that I have a slight fault with my PSU, and I think it must be on the 2nd set of the 4 pin CPU connectors. My current board only uses one set of these and sometimes it can be a little slow to kick in (normally I have to power off at the PSU switch at rear and then drain all power from system, then it works fine) However as the new board requires all the CPU connectors, 8 in total, it would seem that it will just not budge. I have tried the new setup with a borrowed PSU and all fans etc, kick in immediately...so looks like a new PSU is heading my way very soon !

Thanks for the help and suggestions anyway guys.
