New C Class Coupe

why has the CLK gone and been replaced with the E class coupe name then ?

i can quote sources till the house come home that MB have told the press that the E class coupe is a CLK replacement.

The E Class Coupe *is* the CLK replacement. But it's a C Class Coupe in terms of market position.

I know, this is all very confusing and stupid, but we have Mercedes to blame for that.

The 3 Series Saloon and it's Coupe equivilent are easy to identify and always have been as BMW are sensible enough to name it properly.

The relationship between a C Class and a CLK though is similar to that between 3 Series Saloon and Coupe. The fact the E Class Coupe is the CLK's replacement, coupled with the fact it remains built on the C Class platform and is still priced to compete with the 3 Series Coupe, means despite it's misleading name, it is the Coupe equivilent of a C Class, not the E Class.

Let's look at some more info. We'll compare it to a 3 Series.

330d SE Coupe: £37195 on the road
E350 CDI BlueEfficiency SE Coupe: £36730 on the road.

It's actually CHEAPER than a 3 Series Coupe - just. It's clear which car its main rival is - the 3 Series Coupe.

It all gets a bit confusing when we look at the platform as it seems there is conflicting reports of what it's actually based on. Irrespective of that, it's pretty clear where it's priced to compete - hello 3 Series Coupe.

Meanwhile, from Autocars reveal of the 'C Class Coupe':

The Mercedes C-class coupe will take the place of the CLC in Mercedes' range, and go on sale in 2011.

So it's clearly a CLC replacement - and the CLC was a crud bottom of the range hatchback. I'm thinking more 1 Series Coupe for the new model?

This is confusing because IMHO Merc have made a right mess of all this :p

indeed

what the hell does the C class coupe do that the E class coupe doesnt

given that both appear to be built on the C class platform !

confused poster is confused :(

It's just ridiculously confusing. It was confusing enough when we had the CLK which had a Class interior it was that obvious yet no, we also had a 'C Class Coupe' in the range that was actually a hatchback

It certainly isn't a 6 Series rival..

E350 CGI Sport Coupe: £40945
BMW 630i Sport Coupe: £59295

£20,000 cheaper than a 6 Series! (And 15cm shorter)

Just where is this car targetted

E-Class coupe existed before the CLK came out. They brought the CLK out, after the second generation, they renamed the third generation back to the E-Class coupe. But Fox is right as it sits more in terms with the BMW 3-Series.

Why make a C-Class Coupe? It would look more a three series rival then a BMW 1 series rival.

So weird. Unless they price it similar money to the 1-Series coupe.

It did but this was indisputably an E Class Coupe. It was built on the E Class platform, it was priced like an E Class, infact it was quite obviously not aimed anywhere near a 3 Series.

1995 prices...

E320 Coupe: £42,000
BMW 328i Coupe: £26100!

It was £10,000 more even than an M3 Coupe!

They brought the CLK out, after the second generation

Which was an entirely different car really - it was based on a C Class, built like a C Class and priced like a 3 Series. Which as you can see wasn't the case with the last true E Class Coupe.

So they're doing what Audi have done. Create cars which don't really have a target audience. Just Great.

I would have thought that in spirit the CL is the competitor to the 6 Series, however the CL only comes with huge engines which put it in another league in terms of price. They're both 2+2 coupes?

Again, no.

BMW 650i SE Auto: £61740
Mercedes CL500: £80585.

The CL500 is an S Class Coupe - a with no BMW or Audi rival. If anything it's closer to something like a Conti GT.

the CL is an S class based car iirc ?

So effectively its a 7 series coupe / A8 coupe

but neither of those exist so its more of a rival to cars like the Bentley Continental GT.

Pfft, started finishing each others' sentences... hehe. I would have been better off saying that the nearest competitor in the range is the CL, rather than spiritual. It's a loose connection I'll grant!

Wow this thread is full of garbage.

As for this car, I can't see the point. As has been said (lots), the E Class Coupe is in fact a C Class underneath. bloody nice though all the same :)

As for the C Class Sports Coupe and CLC being ****.
They weren't ****, they just weren't anything special.
Although I must say that the CLC is/was a complete con.

In the premium car market, not being anything special is pretty much the same thing. Becuase it removes the point in spending more for a premium car.

By your logic then, most of the Audi range is ****.

My gf has one of these and I actually quite like it.

It's not very fast (180K) and it's rubbish on fuel for a slow car but it's nice to drive, the ride is good and it's good looking. It's a C class hatch, nothing more, nothing less.

My gripe with these now is that it's now over 10 years old, and it wasn't anything fantastic to begin with.
Merc's 4 pot petrols have always been a bit crap really, which doesn't help.

Panoramic roof makes a big difference though as not a lot of cars have it as an option.
The only downside is that fire crews can't use the jaws of life. Bit random, but then you never notice until it happens to you..
