Hi, after trying to upgrade this old 939 system ive decided to bite the bullet and go intel and c2d. This will be my first intel system .

After hours of looking around ive put together this. Im hoping I can run this on my current Enermax 495W ATX2 psu (EG495AX-VE) if possible. I wont be overclocking. I also wonder will my current SATA hardrive run in this fine? is sata backwards compatible (Serial ATA-150, 7,200 RPM, 16MB - MPN: 6L250S0).

Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.33GHz (1333FSB) - £115.14
Asus P5K Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard - £88.11
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 - £64.61
768Mb 8800GTX PCI-E (x16) - £293
Akasa PCI Express 6-Pin to 4-Pin Power Adaptor - £3.51 (my psu only has 1)

I wasnt sure on the major difference between a E6550 and an E6600 apart from the £40 difference the different FSB and a tiny bit more performance.

Anyone have any other recommendations and will all this work together ok?

any help appreciated, thanks
Mike:)

It will all work together fine, SATA is backwards compatible so you can just connect it as per usual although you might need to reactivate Windows if you are changing across a boot drive or a clean reinstall is probably better.

Can I enquire what size of monitor you have? It might be that an 8800GTS or 2900XT could be a better (and cheaper) option at the moment. :)

I have dual 19" Samsung SyncMaster 930BF's. I also have Vista here waiting to be installed if needed. The reason im upgrading really is to put a 2900 or GTX in it. Is that geil memory pretty fast? I cant fault the current 3200 geil I currently have now, I just find it odd geil isnt widely distributed, ive only found it on OCUK.

thanks for the info, I was lookin at the 2900XT's but they seem to use a lot more power and the 8800gtx seems to be better especially for £50 more.

The 8800GTX is definitely better then the 2900XT but a 8800GTS would be all you need on that 19” monitor.

im thinking this mobo Gigabyte GA_P35_DS3R will be better than the asus which is a crossfire board ive just noticed. This board is also bundled with this memory in the bundles section so it should be compatible.

Just because the Asus supports Crossfire doesn't mean it would not work with the 8800GTX, think of Crossfire simply as an additional feature that you can use if you choose to. There is no way that Nvidia (or ATI for that matter) would be stupid enough to cripple their competitors product by building incompatible technology at this level.

The Gigabyte will be fine but so would the Asus is the basic point. :)

ah I thought crossfire ran with 2 pci-e slots at 8x and not a solid 16x slot. The gigabyte seems to have better features anyway and is the same price.
