New cabinet

Michael Gove sacked.

How do they get away with that? I've always wondered if it's performance related but surely you'd have to put him/her on a performance development plan first? :D

I appreciate there is very little Gove love on this forum but I think he is a real loss to Government. It was probably not practical for him to be given a position in Government with Boris at this time and he has probably made a number of enemies whom it would be unwise to antagonise. But he did single handedly keep Boris out of number 10 which was probably for the best.

Apparently he was one of the best minsters in the Government for running and efficient and productive department. Kenneth Clark no friend of Gove's sung his praises in this respect for his work both in Education and Justice.

Yesterday people were wondering how the markets would react to Mrs May's cabinet appointment. Well as of 15 minutes ago:

Pound up 0.7% against the dollar and 1.7% against the yen.
FTSE100 up 0.8%
FTSE250 up 0.65%

Vote of confidence?

He's also great for brand UK, speaking multiple different languages, with international ancestory and a solid grasp of history.

My problem with Boris Johnson is that he believes in a past that never existed. His recent biography of Churchill is a case in point. It's an entertaining read but repeatedly presents the myths of Churchill as fact. The book was well-received in the mainstream press but left historians pulling their hair out. It's the kind of book that has a real negative effect on the public's understanding of history.

He treats politics the same way. He's willing to tell lies that are so absurdly false that he can't possibly think that he'd get away with them. He lives in some kind of bizarre alternative universe.

I agree there, I was at the MoJ consulting when he was there, and I know teachers who (in private) sing of his changes. His problem was always PR, and his public betrayal of colleagues post-referendum means his image is now utterly broken. He'll stay a strong back bench MP I'm sure.
