new car e39

Maybe you should have checked before buying?! Common e39 problem, you did do some reading first... surely?

Turn the air conditioning on while stationary, the pusher fan (electric fan at the front of the engine bay) should spring into life after a few seconds. New fan is a few hundred quid - stops the aircon system overheating.

what is this and how do i check it?

yeh i do it was dark i didnt see the 523i badge when i bought it

it says the engine is 2499 cc on logbook so thought it was 525

Didn't it say 523 on the logbook then? or didn't you look at that?

What sort of person buys a car in the dark and looks over it so little he doesn't even see what the badge on the back says?

OH WAIT WE KNOW THE ANSWER!

It's a 523i.

I am genuinelly sad you've bought an E39. Hopefully it will explode on you big time and generate a £1500 bill forcing you to scrap it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't see much potential for epic bills on a boggo 523i that would prove terminal enough to scrap it? Not if you do the smart thing and avoid the dealers at least.

Did the Autotrader advert only say "BMW E39 FOR SALE" or something? At least it didn't turn out to be a 520i I suppose.

Even at an independent, if they've not already been done, rectifying the list of "common" e39 weaknesses could run to more than he paid for the car. This is why it's a clever idea to read up on the issues first and check with the seller that there is proof they have been done.

Front suspension, new tyres and the cooling system should do it.

What does it being a 'boggo 523i' have to do with it? Fundamentally the important and complicated bits on this are the same as the ones you'd find on a fully loaded £8k worth of lower mile 2003 530i Sport?

If anything goes wrong with the cooling system, for example, and you don't immediatly stop the car you'll fry the head gasket and a proper repair on an M52 is a very skilled job - most of the time the engine is scrap and if you DO repair it, it doesnt last 5 minutes.

Mind you thats enough time to get it on Ebay advertised as 'NEVER HAD A FAULT' I suppose.

^So. If you don't like that, don't post. Everyone could leave his car alone and thread alone, and we wouldn't be dragging motors down yet another notch with it.
