New Car - Hot Hatch - which?

Why isn't it? Why ask Gilly?

Its a hatch and it is fast, surely that's a hot hatch?

Here's the proof, mate. :D

I cant agree more!

That > GTI > CTR > every other hot hatch

The CTR is the only hothatch you've mentioned :p

The new Golf GTI is a hot hatch Gilly.

Since when?

Have they significantly lightened and shortened it?

From here.

Aye, still stand by it too :)

I wouldn't argue about it being a fairly fast hatchback, but are all fast hatchbacks hot hatches? The example I used in the linked thread was the ST220. Its a hatchback. Its pretty fast. Is it a hothatch?

I wouldn't say so.

Maybe Hyperhatch is a better description - AFAIK a hot hatch should be lightened and "minimal", GTI mk1 being the classic example.

/helps throw line further..... ;)

It has 5 doors so no it isn't

The defination of hot hatch has come along since the mk1 golf and 205. The golf is faster than a clio so for the gti to not be a hot hatch then neither is the clio :p

In the late 70s/80s/most of the 90s, that was what the hot hatch was all about.

It's not in the 21st century.

Clio 172 and 182 are thus not hot hatches, I would hardly call Xenon headlamps, climate control, full leather, etc etc as 'lightened and minimal' ;)
So do the Cup/Trophy versions count? To me, the Peugeot Ralleye series were up there as well.

It's not in the 21st century.

But many people's idea of the ideal "sports" car is still the same - minimal weight and reasonable power = serious fun. Witness the rise and rise of the Exige and it's variants, or the continued success of Caterham with what amounts to a 40 year old design.

What about the Golf G60? or the G60 limited? 210bhp in a Mk2? Surely that is a hot hatch, even though it has five doors. :p
Yeah you're right, it was about the only reason I think of as to why the Mondeo wasn't one though :o
