Well ive got my loan money through, so its time to go car shopping :)

At the moment, ive whittled it down to the following.

Astra VXR
Focus ST2
Skoda Octavia Vrs.

The astra is winning, i think it looks pretty tasty, and I can get one in a couple of weeks. I liked the focus as well, but i think it will be a bit more thirsty on the fuel with its 2.5 litre engine (currently got a V6 Vectra 2.6 and it eats petrol for breakfast). Lastly having owned the last version before my vectra, the new octavia Vrs looks lovely.

Is there anything else i should be considering? More importantly, does anyone own any of the cars im considering and can give an objective view of them?

At the moment im leading towards the Astra, purely on looks, and i always wanted an Astra GTE when i was a teenager.

Can anyone also recommend a good online car shop to buy from? I can get £1000 off the astra from the local dealer, the ford dealer wont give me a red cent off, neither will the skoda dealer.

Personally i'd pick the Focus ST in the bright orange colour. Focus ST really stands out for me, i see a golf gti and i just think yeah nice one, i see a focus st and yell "OMFG ITS *** ST!!"

So i was just down at the VW garage looking at the GTI, ive managed to haggle £1000 off which the BS salesman tells me "we just dont do, only because you are about to buy a vauxhall and id hate you to make that mistake".

It would be available end of may, which isnt too bad, would give me a couple of months to save up the extra £1500 quid its costing over the VXR.

What do you guys think of .... white :)

VW's are overpriced at main VWstealers, look at a few independant brokers if your mind is set on one.

I do like it in orange - but i think it might be shouting "steal me!".

The local ford dealers werent prepared to offer any discount, although i can get one online (or could) with a couple of grand off.

Mazda looks good but whens it available, at that sort of money it would interest me, but id be worried about its residual value.

The waiting list is only bad on the focus if you go for loads of options, std models have a delivery time of 4-10 weeks.I was quoted 16 weeks for a Golf gt fsi.

Its a really clse call between the golf and the focus, the golf is well kitted out for its 20k tag, and the st3 is 19k without climate but with leather, so its a close one really, the focus has better steering feel and a touch more power, but the golf is a more measured motor.

Vxr is just a bag of fun which will grate on you after a bit, as it wants to be driven hard all of the time, nice engine, so-so chassis imo.

Oh and the engine note on the focus is sexual, pops and splutters like a rally car!

That could swing it actually :)

Ill be down at the ford garage tomorrow to see what kind of deal they will do.

I test drove a Tdi golf today when i was thinking all sensible, a spin round the block made me realise i was deluding myself :D

You wont get a deal on the ST right now, ford are playing silly beggars even limiting supply so that internet brokers cant sell discounted ST`s

Thanks for everyone who gave their input, and to the chap who mentioned the Golf, its what i ended up ordering today, ill recieve it the end of april, so not too long to wait, its amazing what telling them your about to buy another hot hatch from a rival garage can do too, i ended up with a £1500 discount on the golf despite being repeatedly told that i wouldnt get anything off it :D

Get the VXR

THE VXR!!!

I beg you :o

I was about to buy the VXR till i started this thread, the only thing that put me off was the depreciation, the golf should be worth a good 3 or 4 grand more when i change it in 3 years time, possibly more, if i was rich enough not to worry about the money, then id have gone for the VXR :) As it was, im 33 and this will be my first ever new car, so i had to weigh up all the options.

From what I have read about the Focus ST (been looking into them quite a bit). The petrol consumption isn't too bad at all with some owners regulary getting 30mpg+, obviously that's not hooning it everywhere

DO NOT get a Ford as your first ever new car :p

If you dontwant to go the VXR route, at least get the Golf Gti :D

Well done mate. Now is it in Candy White? :)

Good choice mate, there's a GTI down the road from Uni in black which looks fantastic. Still, wouldn't say no to a focus st either, hot hatch buyers are spoilt for choice at the moment it would seem :)

The GTI is not a hot hatch. Ask Gilly.
