Not noticebaly smaller than the Accord really, is it? But then this is a female we are talking about so no logic in taste :p

She must have taste as she said HELL NO to a mondeo as there ugly as sin :D

I'm struggling to come up with any ideas. The requirements are very tricky - the only cars I can come up with which are small, quick and < £2000 are old and dated which your missus will probably hate :(.

Edit: 306 XSI, S16, possibly even a GTI-6/Rallye by now?

I do like the 306, I had a DT and GTI6 myself but they did fall apart. :( If your used to Honda reliabilty I'd say stay clear of Pugs, they are a downgrade and that's coming from a guy that's had many Pug's - I enjoyed both the 106 and 306 GTI's but they just aren't as reliable or bolted togeather like a Jap car.

An older golf could be an option? Again, not cheap when they go wrong, could be a little tired at that price too.

A 96-00 shape (6th gen) Civic would be a good option because they are supremely reliable and relatively affordable. An LSI for example is a warm hatch with 120 odd hp out of a 1.5, good on insurance, fun, economical if driven mildy and not heavy or big especially compared to the brutish ATR.

You could get a 96-96 VTi for under £2k but you'll need to shop around because they will be tired.

I think the price on the 'other' forum is a little on the light side to be fair, your under average mileage with A/C and what seems to be a clean and well maintained car.

There's no reason a very good condition 99 with A/C and below average miles wont still fetch £6,000 or at least start at that figure, many on PistonHeads have. :)

On the french theme, £2k should be enough for a reasonable Xsara VTR/S. Golf GTI Mk3 is an option but very dull, not really a girl's car.

Its a bit of a toss up, I think the VTS and 106 GTi are accomplished cars A-B for what they are (go-karts) but once you start using them on a daily basis you miss the comfort and luxury of bigger cars, my brothers VTS rattled and my 106 rattled, they feel very tiny.

I agree about the Golf, very bland.

My mother owns a 52 plate GTI with all the trim, 3 door and recaro's. It's dull and sloppy to drive, sure the engine is strong but the rest of the car is so boring... BUT it does a good job of being a daily useable driver.

It's a 3 door.

Damn, I was focussing on it being small, forgot about the 5 door thing :(.

I think the general consensus is that our Mr. Skywalker already has a bloody good car and should tell the missus to like it or lump it :p.

Edit: One more 5 door suggestion, Rover 400? I'm sure they did a warm version and it's essentially a very similar car to your old Civic.

I wont really be driving the car as I am heading onto 2 wheels so she has the car on a daily basis

306 xsi? Hmm I dont know :s A mondeo ST24 would be a good choice but if shes anything like my gf would not be seen dead in one, lol.

Its just as big though, the ST that is.

I'm really shocked your mrs wants to get rid of one of the best FWD saloons in its class for a cheaper, slower, older and more then likely less comfortable car.

Also remind her the ATR has a 5 star NCAP rating, you can't replace that kind of safety easily.

Errr, are you sure? I dont think it does..

Its on the Honda brochure?

The latest Accord (2003) was lowered to 4 stars (still very good) because it has issues whereby the legs could come into contact with the dash in a frontal impact.

A dutch guy (I believe it was?) last year was hit head on by an artic lorry, the ATR's cabin survived the impact entirely. He attributed the ATR's strength to him walking away alive as did the emergency services.

I would assume it is the same as the normal old-shape Accord which has a 4-star rating.

Shame it doesn't have a seatbelt reminder to gain an extra star :p
