New car

Fair enough :)

What would the implications have been of opting for the 1.8T FSI were it around when you were out looking? Despite the fact I really should know, I haven't a clue how company car taxation is worked out!

Really nice car, im guna convince my mum to get a not so sporty one when she changes her car (from a Corsa C D: )

Dunno about the 1.8T as I've not seen the specs of it yet.

As for company car tax, basically the CO2 output dictates a tax rate from 15% to 35% (diesels are generally lower but attract a 3% levy due to the particulate output). You then take this percentage of the list price of the vehicle and then pay tax on that at whatever rate is applicable (i.e. 22% or 40%).

When this system was introduced a few years back it instantly became a total no-brainer to go diesel as the CO2 output of petrols was horrendous by comparison. These days it's less clear cut as petrols have become a lot more efficient in the emissions department although diesels still have a clear edge.

TBH, although many here will think I'm bonkers, I do actually prefer the way diesels drive most of the time. Actually, to be more specific, I like engines with large quantities of torque (256lbft in the case of mine) as it makes for a very relaxed and effortless way of making progress. I really can't be doing with revving engines to death to get anywhere which I suppose is largely down to my advancing years. Yes, in an ideal world I'd love a thunderous great V8 like Tom's with oodles of torque as this gives the best of both worlds but my real-world choices are a bit more limited and, of the available options, I preferred the diesel. The monetary savings just "sealed the deal" so to speak.

In a few years, when this one's up for replacement, I'll probably be about due my midlife crisis so, depending on my financial situation at the time, a used B7 RS4 could be a very tempting option :D

Just tell her to stay away from the 1.6 petrol please! :)

Seriously, I've driven the 2.0FSI and it was awful and needed the nuts revved off it to get anywhere. Get her to stretch to the new 1.8T if she can or, if not, consider going diesel. Even the 1.9TDI will be a load better than the 1.6.

Great car Vertigo but those options are expensive. Still, why not splash out once in a while :)
Audi option prices are a complete joke. I didn't actually realise that it totalled £4.7k until I added it all up for the purpose of this thread!

Basically I have no kids and have no need for anything larger plus I really like the shape and interior of the A3. I know it's a bit boring to have the same model car twice in succession but I figured why not stick with what I like and just load it up with more toys? :)

Heh, will do, thanks for the advice.
