Alright, I'm a new dude here. I found this site out by looking for x1950pro information. I've decided to make the move to PCI Express. I currently have an AV69N motherboard, 480W Echo Star PSU, 2.8 Northwood P4, and a Geforce 6200 256Meg(ewww.) I've looked it over and I'm sure I can switch my 184-pin RAM too my new motherboard. My new setup will be a

Motherboard: ASUS A8V-E SE Socket 939 VIA K8T890 ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail

GFX Card: POWERCOLOR X1950 PRO Extreme 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Extreme Edition Video Card With AC Cooling - Retail

Processor:AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Windsor 2.0GHz Socket AM2 Processor Model ADA3800CUBOX - Retail

PSU: OCZ OCZ600GXSSLI GameXStream 600W Power Supply Retail

Does all of this look like it will run well together? And if not, then what do I need to change. Also, if it will work together, will it be a kickass computer? Thanks for your help.

It would be a kick*** if now were two years ago. :p ;)

I'd avoid a VIA chipset like the plague. They're crap overclockers and they've known issues. VIA's only strength is in the low-power and embedded market.
That PSU is way way way way overkill for that spec's needs. A decent 450ish Watt unit would costs less and would meet your needs.

How much are you willing to spend on the project?

Alright, instead of that motherboard, how about this one

I heard that people prefer nForce4 Ultra's as opposed to other chipsets. But with this rig, I'm aiming for some badass BF2/2142 gaming as well as some Oblivion. I'll be in the Army in 6 months, so right now I'm just trying to have fun.
I'll probably end up getting an expensive Laptop with DX10 GFX, and quad core CPU in a year. Hopefully they'll have them.
Edit: Oh, I'm trying to stay within $5-6 hundred. I just heard that x1950pro's were power monsters, and people recommended the GameXstream(plus I could use it in the future, and it's only $80 after rebate.)

It's budgetary reasons. I'm a senior in Highschool with some old, old, old savings bonds. My computer now makes me sad.

Or should I keep my current rig and use an x1950pro agp? Just realised that CPU is socket AM2. Is AM2 a good socket?

It's all up to how much you want to spend. Intel's Core2Duo line of processors is whipping the snot out of AMD in terms of overall performance and cost at the moment so I hesitate to recommend any AMD. That said, AM2 isn't bad. It's pretty much just 939 with support for DDR2 memory.
 
Well crap...I think I'll have to find a different CPU, which is 939, because I don't know if I can afford a gig of DDR2 memory. How much do you think I could get for various computer parts from my original build? Haha...I'm a loser.

That's before shipping. For a bit more you could get better RAM which would allow for a higher overclock. I'd like to have a better PSU too. Cooler Master isn't a great PSU manufacturer but it's far better than similarly priced generics.

EDIT: hp, he said above that he was looking to spend between $500 and $600. :p

Are you guys sure I should get that Intel setup instead? The 430W power supply will power everything, even if I get a soundcard? I'm sure I can get a little better RAM and the GameXstream Power supply. I will look into that Intel setup.
 
I might be able to go over the $600 mark. I like the intel setup because it allows quad-core for the future. Should I get that Sapphire x1950pro over the Powercolor x1950pro extreme? Should I get a different powersupply, such as the GameXstream 600W? And last but not least, should I get the RAM which I mentioned earlier instead, it's one stick, ddr 800. These forums are awesome, usually you have to wait a few hours, but not here, you guys reply instantly. Thanks guys.
 
The OCZ PSU is great, If you can stretch your budget I would get an E6300, change the mobo to a GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 instead of the S3 & push the ram up to PC6400, will be a lot better in overclocking
