new cpu advice

Hello I am looking to build a new pc I know what I would like in regards to gpu's and ssd's and so on. The only thing I can't decide on is the cpu.

I use my computer for gaming, distributed computing and some video encoding.

I am leaning towards an intel i7 but because of the ht cores they can not do floating point calculations which makes it only as good as an i5 in terms of speed when it comes to distributed computing.

For this point I am looking at the and piledriver 8 core (i am not wanting to cause another "its not a true 8 core cpu troll") CPUs but because of really bad core vs core with Intel CPUs is seems like a bad idea.

So what I am asking is which would be the best CPU to choose and if I should maybe wait for the next gen stuff if they are going to be a lot better and I do over clock so that may change things too.

Thankyou for your help.

Unless I'm wrong, floating point calculations on the AMD stuff isn't all that great at all.

Because of the Video encoding, I'd probably go for the Haswell i7, but video encoding on the FX83 stuff is pretty good (If you can use the right software)

If you want consistency and don't mind paying extra, go for the 4770K, if you want consistency, but lower overall performance, go for the i5 4670K.

Otherwise, FX83.

I do over clock too and I am just a bit scared of going haswel because of the rumors about some haswel chips not being able to get to 4.4 before having heat issues or are these just that, rumors.

Haswell's the most inconsistent chip I've seen for overclocking lol.

I'm running 4.6GHZ at 1.3v, but some people can't run 4.6GHZ with 1.4v

I can't reach 4.4GHz without 1.31v, which is too much for most air coolers.

And I sent the first one back, which couldn't reach 4GHz stable without 1.3v.

No wonder you hate Intel :p
I jest.

My first 4670K was crap as well, I sent it back as I was having instability, which turned out to be my Gigabyte Z87 OC.

I had to send back my Asus Maximus Gene too. It wouldn't start half the time and the USB ports kept failing randomly. The Z87 OC is fine so far.

My previous i5 2500K was fine at 5GHz in my Z68 board on good temps. One reason I switched was because I wanted to go M-ATX, now I've gone back to ATX anyway.

My 4770K will probably hit 4.5GHz ok with my cooler but I've just left it at 4.2GHz at 1.2v for now.
