Just bought a 780 ti to go with my PC. CPU is a bit old though (i5 760) so thinking I should go for a new motherboard, RAM and CPU.

So what i7, motherboard and RAM (16GB) should I go for? What's the best air cooler? I'd like to overclock it.

I currently have a Corsair TX 650 W PSU from 2010. Will this be fine?

I don't have a budget in mind, I want something good. I don't want to pay extortionate amounts though :D.

Thanks!

Personally if it was me, I would see how it ran before parting with any of my own cash.
But if I was going to upgrade, I'd go 4770k with a gigabyte or asus z87 motherboard of some kind, depending on size and what you want from it.

That PSU should still be fine.

Also what do you want it for and what rez?

Air cooler, theres the noctua d14, Phanteks PH-TC14PE, Alpenföhn K2 Mount Doom, I went for Thermalright Silver Arrow SB-E SE personally. Obviously you have to make sure the big air coolers will fit your case.

1080p, gaming. It's not really cutting it for Arma as that's CPU bound and GPU usage is at 30%.

Currently have 4GB RAM. Bit low as well these days.

Just a rough idea for you, you can go cheaper on the memory if you wanted but dominator is a really nice set. Also the Gigabyte G1 sniper is a nice motherboard.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-4770K 3.50GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £245.99
1 x Corsair Dominator PLATINUM 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit with DHX Pro Connector (CMD16GX3M2A1600C9) £179.99
1 x MSI Z87-G45 Gaming Series Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £124.99
1 x Alpenföhn K2 Mount Doom CPU Cooler £49.99
Total : £610.56 (includes shipping : £8.00).

I thought for the Corsair platinum, you were paying extra basically for the heat spreaders?

How does the Asus Sabertooth compare? Obviously more expensive, so better that's a given!

The asus sabertooth is a really nice motherboard in my opinion great quality and features but of course your paying the premium, I would have suggest this memory but they do not seem to have a 16gb kit unfortunately. (but they do have other colours in 16gb)

Setter makes a good point, its always good to take note of the clearance between the Memory and the Cooler.

I have the fractal R3 case, I think any big cooler will fit? Would that corsair dominator ram even fit with that mount doom cooler?

Your case supports.

* Supports CPU coolers with height of ~165mm

The dominator will not fit with the mount doom (that's my bad, I am tired is my excuse xD)

I doubt if the corsair vengeance pro would fit with the k2. Prior to the TG kit i tried a patriot venom red kit, slightly higher fins. I could just about get it into slots 2 + 4 with the cooler installed. If using all slots the cooler would have to have been removed. Below is an old pic of the patriot kit fitted below the k2.

It was faulty so i returned it to ocuk and got the TG kit as a replacement. Its not as tall as the ram in the pic and the cooler clears it easily.

If the primary use of the PC is gaming, the i5 is more than enough grunt:)
The motherboard I've selected is getting some good reviews atm for overclocking and I went for low profile RAM to ensure you have enough clearance with a cooler.
The Megahalems will fit in your case, I've got one in an R2 :)

I should add, a reasonably quiet cooler as well.

What sort of clocks can these i7 Haswells achieve? 4.6ghz? I'm not looking to 'extreme' overclock, so perhaps I don't need a huge cooler. Rather more focused on a good overclock, that's reasonably quiet.

Yeah 4.6ghz is very doable, if your wanting quiet fans id properly suggest buying some corsair sps or noctua's .

1 x Corsair SP120 Quiet Series High Pressure Low Noise - Dual Pack (CO-9050006-WW) £25.99
1 x Noctua NF-P12-PWM 120mm Silent Case Fan - PWM Pin £19.99

The k2 with it's stock fans is pretty quiet, but ive swapped the fans on mine. Oc wise, it's a bit of a lottery as to how well a chip will clock. Haswell chips are very hot running if stressed with synthetic programs like prime95 etc. But in normal use theyre fine, im seeing 67c max in games at 4.5ghz, 1.267v. My chip is a very hot one if stressed, (90c +) but i dont bother with theese programs anymore. Prior to the setup in sig i had a 3770k @4.5ghz, even at 4.2 the hw chip was faster.

So I think I'm sorted for the i7 4770k and Sabertooth. Still trying to think about the cooler and RAM. Obviously RAM may be restricted with a big cooler!

It will probably come down to aesthetics really, do you want a large cooler and not really being able to few the memory or do you want the memory on show and a cleaner looking cooler (AOI system).
