New Dan Brown book - The Lost Symbol - out next week

I am reading it now got to the first 100 pages. It seems to me that Brown is struggling with Langdons character.

You have got to love book snobs. Take Brown's writing as a story it is engaging and well written and certainly no worse than some so called classics out there ...cough LOTR.

Anything that gets people reading and away from X factor is a good thing imo.

That you would insult tolkien to big up brown is hilarious. Where is the character development? The relationships? It's all just running about after the next maguffin.

Because Tolkien is the literary equivalent of watching paint dry. Brown is a piece of entertainment and some seem to forget that reading should be entertaining, not just about enlightenment, knowledge and insight.

Brown is pornography. Tolkien a 1000 page romance novel.

What im saying is i'd rather pick up Angels & Demons than plough through anything like The Silmarillion again.

And I havn't insulted Tolkien I just don't think he's the God people make him out to be.

Just read it on the train and it's an ok book, although very predictable (most "secrets" were given away chapters/half the book before). I look forward to seeing what it will look like in film as, unlike the previous two books, there were a few bits that I have no idea how they will transfer to film. Got to say though two things struck me when reading the book, one Dan Brown must have recently bought an iPhone... and two he seems to be reading way too many conspiracy forums for his own good, especially 2012 ones!

As for whether his books are good, well they are just as good as most other novels out there. If I wanted to read an intelectual book I would pick up a textbook or journal, instead I want something to just read, and Dan Brown does books like that. I read a booker prize book last year and tbh it was nothing to write home about, yeah it had a few "big" words in but other than that was far more boring and slow (although not as bad as I thought it would be)...
