new dream pc advice

what does a dead pixel look like? i imagin jus an extremly small dot that doesnt work on the screen? i have a small chip/scratch on my screen, and it drives me crazy.

it's just one pixel that doesn't change color, i was only testing it on my current PC so i haven't tried anything other than gently flicking/rubbing it. I can't RMA it as they allow for a certain number of dead pixels. I will try flashing programs etc once i set it up on my new pc and everything....might get lucky and it might go by then anyway, just from being on off on etc. It also isn't actually that noticible unless its on a black background where it appears lighter, on all other colors its hardly noticble and i keep losing where it is (due to the brightness of the other pixels and my eyes). On light colors i cant even see it.

Here's to hoping its just stuck and fixes itself :D

Edit: it also wasn't at its max resolution (was using sclaing on my graphics card to make it work at 1680*1050) as i was trying it on my main PC on the default DVI port, which was already set to 1680, and it would go above 1920 but i think this is because its the secondary DVI port as the primary is dodgy). Will wait till ive got it all set up on my new one to get annoyed.

Dead pixel policy of most companies are rubbish. I still dont understand why its fine for one person to get a better deal than another on a brand new item just through luck alone. I'm I being fussy?

Hate dead pixels :(

you mean like how one person gets a better overclocking CPU?
Nobody forces you to buy the stuff, you get a choice, you know that there is a chance of dead pixels and that some manufacturers/retailers deem a few dead pixels as acceptable.

can get a pic of that tonight, only have a phone camera but it is 5MP so it should be fine, anyone recommend a hosting service thats better than imageshack/photobucket? Or are they both fine for the quality of pics you want?

to be fair, it is slightly different. With a CPU you get the same rated chip, its just luck on pushing it past its standard settings. With a monitor it is advertised/sold as however many pixels/res/response etc so you expect it to all be working and not have defects. It's just that rather than bin all the ones that dont work 100% and be forced to up the price of all the monitors, they would rather keep the prices down but have an addendum to the warrenty about dead pixels etc.

IMO both ways are fine but id rather pay more so that i can have a guranteed 0 dead/stuck pixel monitor. I know Benq did a service for my friend where they booted it up and checked it all first, for a fee. If more retailers/manufacturers offered this I'm sure it'd get used.

happy now? :D
Got some fan controllers and thermal paste coming as well since i forgot them on the original order.

its extreme high end gaming, file server in a multi user environment as well as audio and video editing. its all round use (for me) but isnce i do everything from web development to 3d animation/rendering i need a lot of power. I will be waiting for the next gen cards, i was just using the current top as a place holder for price. Its not 8 TB of HDD space either, its 6 1tb drives, which would be used in RAID 5 = 5TB of space. or 4 drives = 3TB of space. My current system with 1.7TB of space only have 60gb free so meh.

I am looking to cut cost though. is ddr 3 really not that much better/useful still?
I would be looking at 8GB for £400 which i know is still expensive but i still remember buying 2GB of Corsair DDR400 for 199£ lol

Lol, you dont even need a tb of HDD space, theres no point and i can almost guarantee u won't use even the one fully up. Save the money on the gtx card.

avoid quad sli if you can, it scales really badly and is quite a waste of money, I know you've got the £ but why waste it?

Quad Sli's are pretty good, the scaling factor may come into effect but they are overall a very good machine, sure games are supportng the dual core atm, but if u want a machine thats future-proof the quads the way to go.

you say i wont use even 1tb of space? i currently have around 40GB free in my system and its got 1.7TB of space, and that is all going ot be copied over onto the new machine due to RAID back up etc.

Quad SLI is bad as it scales badly and the limited memory bandwidth isnt good for gaming at 2560 res.

K my bad about the HDD Side of things, i have a Q660 not a SLI, just used 1, 3D Marked etc....showed good results, but certainly 1 x 6 TB drives is OTT.

Not if there in a raid 5 he will loose one for redundancy, Read speed will be faster write speed will be slower.

For most people this amount of space is OTT, but im just annoyed at running out of space every few months and since im going for RAID its simplest if i just buy them all at the same time. If i wasn't raiding i would only buy 2 and then add more as needed, so that they go down in price in between me buying them etc.

The 9800gtx can often out perform the GTX280 but when it gets to 2560 res they get hurt badly by the lower memory bandwidth. With poor scaling from 2 > 4 (read -50% in oblivion and +30% in other games) compared to the scaling on 1 > 2 being around 10-80% the GTX 280s are a better choice for what i want...shame about the cost though.

It's Also a shame that the Leadtek ones are now out that are clocked higher and are cheaper than the XFX ones, and my mobo is cheaper now, when i haven't even built it yet lol.-

Unless there is a dedicated RAID-5 controller in there the performance on those 6 HDDs will be terrible. On-board RAID controllers are bad for anything other than RAID-0 or RAID-1 (and not great for them either). With the budget for this I would've spent the £300 or so needed to have a decent RAID controller - it would make much more of a difference than a lot of the other wastage on this project.

Jealously :D Agreed with regards to the on board RAID controller. They are easy enough to find second had as well ...

i will, if i notice/care about the performance. :D
Those chairs are some art deco ones, they are wicked.....although i never sit in them (they are loaned to us, as we only recently moved in) The chair i normally sit in is my High backed leather massage chair, or the sofa, or the ikea rocker chairs i have. basically those chairs do suck but i never sit there so i dont want new ones lol
