Ive just ordered a new hard drive as i think my maxator is on its way out!. Can someone tell me or point me in the direction of somewhere that will tell me how to basically copy my maxator drive onto the new samsung one? I read the sticky but couldnt really find that information in it. i wanna just ditch the maxator one. I currently have a CD drive plugged into the secondary IDE channel by itself and the HD and a CD drive plugged into primary so the only spare IDE slot is on secondary channel with a disk drive.

While im doing this would i be best plugging both CD drives into the secondary and leaving the HDD as the primary (and put both HDD on primary to do the exchange?) and if i did this would my computer just boot and accept it or will i have to do a lot of stuff?

im a complete newb so bare with me ;)

Shouldn't make any difference where your drives are. All you have to do is make sure you have set the correct jumper settings on the HDD itself.

If the drive is sharing an IDE cable with something else, then check to see what the other device is set to. If it is Master, set your HDD to Slave and vice versa.

To do clone of the old HDD you need something like Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image. I know there is a 30 day trial avaliable for True Image - not sure if Norton do one for Ghost.

From experience ive found True Image to be pretty easy to use and you should have no problems cloning your HDD.

Get Acronis TrueImage or Norton Ghost (I prefer TrueImage)

Connect the new harddrive on the 2nd IDE channel as master (leave the CD drive disconnected) or as a slave, it really doesn't matter.

Tehn Start TrueImage and select cloning, it will clone (copy) all the data from the Maxtor to the new drive and even allows you to select partitions if you want.

After cloning, shut down, remove the Maxtor and set the new drive in it's place and start up.
