New Driving Laws being enforced in England

I see nothing wrong with being proud of the country in which one lives. Why are the English people so against a bit of patriotism?

I was in the USA a week after 9/11 and I'd say 80% of cars had American flags flying from them. They're proud of themselves, why can't we be the same?

I agree to a certain extent but these things just seem like tacky, tatty bits of plastic and I wouldn't want to be seen dead in a car that has one! :).

Funny how people show all this patriotism for the football but none for St Georges Day.

Theres not a lot of point really. How does it support your team? It just supports some business man. It just shows that your a "England fan" and theres not much point if your living in England becuase the majority of "England fans" live guess where? England.

That's a very cynical attitude for someone so young, good on ya! :p

I don't think theres anythin wrong with showin a lil support for your country in the world cup, be it tacky flags on cars or a h00ge one in a window, nout wrong with bein patriotic, I love me football and me g/f likes to get involved with Euro/World cups and usually does purchase said flags, wear england gear and all the rest of it and why not, it's a bit of fun and it comes round once every 2 years, lighten up people and just lets enjoy everyone rootin for the same thing and generally getting on while we can.

About St georges day, we celebrate that too, usually in the form of many bombadier and terrible singin, but we do our bit. :p

I wish I could say that this non patriotism is a recent fad but I can remember all the same comments back in 1970 and every World Cup and Euro (and Home Internationals) since.

These flags are getting on my nerves when I run home from work because that many break off and get in my way on the floor.

Quite funny but at work some of the blokes have hung an array of about 10 big England flags from the roof and there is one Polish flag there too.
When I was walking in a mate turned to me and said "You probably see England flags but I see swastikas".
So sad people think this way.

and some people even go as far to say "i hope england get knocked out the world cup"

who are these people.. are they pretending they arent english?... it always seems to be english people that say it too.. weird.

I am one of those people who hopes to see England get booted out as soon as possible. But my reasoning is I dislike football, and would prefer not to have it shoved in my face at every possible opportunity. Once England go out, all the noise about the world cup should die down.

What the HELL is wrong with people seeing our NATIONAL FLAG as a RACIST symbol?

because usually the only people who bother with it are members of the BNP. ;)

were only better than those "other countrys" because we like most of the western world are very good at ripping off and screwing over small developing countrys.

Never thought the day would come I agreed with DD but there it is...

There seems to be two things at the moment. One is it's "trendy" to brand anyone with any pride in being English as "racist/ill informed/chav/thug". The other is it's seen as "trendy" by some to assert how cool they are by not being proud of their country or nationality. "What's England done in the last 100 years, how can you be proud about things done hundreds of years before you were born, it's the individual, being English means nothing to me, I just live here, nationality doesn't define me etc"...

I'm sure it's not a new thing but it just seems to be fashionable now for some English to be anti English. The Scots, Welsh and Irish tend to be a lot more open about being proud of their nationality and heritage, as do the US, French etc. Just seems a shame that a what amounts to a small rainy group of islands off the coast of europe that achieved so much seems to have got to the point where the last two generations almost seem embaressed to be English.

Perhaps we're just paying the price for Empire, generations always seem to rebel against what came before... Can't help but think if this generation had of been around in 1940 we'd have decided that anything going on in europe was nothing to do with us and we should mind our own business....

/shrug

Ooooh, I feel a Churchillian moment coming on, someone pass me the brandy and cigars :D

Me old dear bought me one of these home last week, said you her, you are having a giraffe if you think i'm having that on my ST,

Silly little things !

I'm proud of my country, it was only recently I was seriously considering getting a flagpole nailed to the side of my house so that I could proudly display my national flag but the cost of getting it done properly was prohibitive.

It does annoy me to see the reaction to our flag like this :(

And what pray tell are you doing to rebalance the scales? Are you off to live in one of those other countries donating your skills to put things right and help them create a better quality of life for their citizens? Or are you just happy to take all the advantages and comforts the UK has to offer whilst disapproving of the "ripping off" that provides you with the quality of life you are fortunate enough to enjoy living in the UK?

You can still be proud of your nationality without having a flag on your house/car to show other people you are.
