New Dryer

The thing that puts me off with these Heat pump/Condenser Un-Vented dryers is damp. All that moisture has to go somewhere, and I'd much rather it went outside than sit in the room.

It does go some where into the water tank. I get zero damp from the machine.

sounds as though you have done the repair job for them.

Did they ever publich exactly what is wrong with the hotpoints, is it just inadequate mechanisms to get rid of fluff combined with poor user maintenance ?

The replacement hotpoint condenser (£100 delivered one) we had, showed a fault code in first month (p06 did not find on web) so they came out and fixed that, but after hearing further radio item, as I say, concerned even this may be flawed.

Nothing mentioned yet, they're round on Tuesday to do the modification. Apparently it's some sort of scoop for the fluff!.....

This is a picture after I'd taken the top layer of fluff out of the (7yr old) drier!.....

fascinating - if Hotpoint/whirlpool showed pictures like that people would be complaining more.

Coincidentally - another radio4 article today 12:20ish - issue is that fluff container too close to heating element; following the repair one customer had had the thing catch fire later that day, plus they found whirlpool hotline gave incorrect info about models concerned.

Do all dryers have multiple filters, i find myself emptying one every time i use the machine and the one at the bottom i take the smallest amount of fluff out maybe once a month.

Picked up a Beko 8Kg condensing one on Black Friday, really good dryer, seems to work well, doesnt make the kitchen damp or anything, clothes come out really good.

The filters on mine have been cleaned after every use. There's a reason Indesit/Hotpoint have admitted a fault and issued a mass countrywide engineering fix!

I know, I am doing the modifications.

The point still stands, if people cleaned the filters are per the instructions the problem is almost non existent.

I have seen none that have shown any signs of catching fire.

Nature of fix would suggest lint build up occurs in an inaccessible place

This includes the replacement of the complete back-panel and rear drum seal, with a new drum seal pre-assembled to the new back-panel. The fix also involves securing a mechanical pin to the rear of the drum to prevent the build-up of lint.

and also suggests checking replacement machine on the list, and maybe that it carries a green(- fixed) sticker - we did not yet do this
I don't know if there is a lint full optical detector/interlock - they spend money on having a pump to push condense up to waist level container instead. :)

... also criticism that no independent body has analysed the problem (although less important, don't think VW had to open their doors either - self regulatory)

My Hotpoint Futura TVFG65B had the fix done on it about 4 months ago and now the thing has stopped heating up, so assume either the heating element has gone or one of the thermostats. Anyone know if they would have fiddled with the thermostats as part of the infamous "fix"? Like do they swap the safety cut out one for one which trips at a lower temperature or something?

The fix the chap did for me this morning was a redesigned back panel and essentially a rivet/screw in the drum to shift the fluff about if it gathers. Didn't do anything with the electrics. Maybe take the side panel off and check your connections as a starting point?

If the filter was kept clean the lint wouldn't build up and then end up in the wrong place. ;)

No, depending on the model you disconnect certain components but as yours was heating after he left it isn't a result of the modification.

You change the back panel, bearing and push a rivet through the drum, that is it on a condenser dryer, on a vented one, you do the same with the addition of a brace across the back.

I dismantled it and checked the element stats and thermistor with a multimeter and all checked out ok, put it back together whilst swearing profusely, test ran it anyway and of course it now works perfectly.

I work in IT, have done for 20+ yrs. If people used computers as they were supposed to I'd be ******* amazed, but I wouldn't expect them to go up in flames!

I think its more like smoking while filling your car with petrol, everything in the manual tells you not to and if you do its your own fault if things go wrong.
