New engine in the Clio :D

For all the people holding out for a Williams engine and gearbox, you can use the Megane F7R bottom end and gearbox on the 1.8 head with a Williams Ecu (about £100) or a remap.

But, the cams aren't as good - even if the valves are a bit bigger. Willy engine is the better way to go if you ask me, but you do have to pay for it, or wait for one. :(

Mmm yummy, bet it goes like a rocket now.

My valvers been pretty reliable, engine is on 96k and still runs great, little tappety on cold but we ignore that ;) . Mind you my car does needs its cambelt doing soon, so might aswell have aux belt and water pump done, oh and the PAS pump is practically dead :( lol

But she does put a smile on my face everytime i boot her and for £700 i wasnt compaining

Oh and i average about 30MPG in my 1.8, mixed driving.

I thought it was the other way round.

Valver has 'wild' cams and smaller valves. Williams milder cames and bigger valves :o

Anyways, I wanna see you TB'ing and stripping that car Lowe :D

williams has slightly larger inlet valves than the 1.8, and slightly more cam lift.

Megane has slightly larger still valves, but smaller ports and milder cams than either the 1.8 or the willy. The megane head is the best of the bunch.

Like the Toyota 4AGE, the designers fell into the trap of thinking big is automatically better when they designed the 1.8/willy ports, then realised their error later and fixed it for the megane head. That's why the Megane makes the same power and much better torque curve than the williams, despite having milder cams. Still no YB or XE, but it's not bad.

Yes you can use the megane BE with a 1.8 head but tbh that's stupid as you're ditching the best part. Lots of people do it though

I guess it's the ballache with the dizzy cap that people like to sidestep though, even if it means losing the better head.

Pah, machine the head to run the dissy, that's what I'm doing, and people have done before me. Only a minor hassle really, and well worth it for the benefits of using the megane head. You can even stick the original 1.8 cams in it for a little bit more go!

I just honestly can't see the point of going to all the expense and work of changing out an engine, only to take a backwards step of crippling it by putting an inferior (and older, more worn) head on it. If you're going to do it, might as well do it properly. IMO of course! :P

How many people have access to a machine shop cheaply that'll do the job though? That's why people don't do it. The other method can still be done in a garage...

You're right though, it is crap. :)

If you’ve paid £500 or whatever for an engine, what’s another £30 to get it machined so you don’t have to throw the best part away?

Hell, you could do it yourself with a die grinder if you had to, it’s only the dissy! :p

Just to clarify... Simon borrowed my dremel tool to fit a bumper or something, broke the little spring that goes between the motor and the output shaft and didn’t tell me. I found out he’d broke it, went ape and made him fix it, so he took it apart and replaced the spring with an old bolt, with flats filed in the ends, top bodge!

Nearly breaks your wrist now because it produces so much more torque! :p ;)

I was actually me who fixed it Neal ;) I still remember how much metal i took out of the turbo manifold for my Rover and left on thge patio :p

Ah thanks for clearing that up Guybrush.

You're from Retro Renault aren't you :D

Thing is though, doesnt the Megane head also need stuff blanking off or 're-designing'?

I didn't think it was as simple as a £30 piece of machining.

Only other thing that needs to be done other than machining the head is you need to make up a couple of little blanking plates to plumb in the 16V ICV and block off the crappy EGR stuff on the megane inlet manifold. Again, hardly the end of the world!
