New essential Android apps thread

I hadn't really considered Messenger I guess, had used it a bit ago when they first started trying to get all the hangouts SMS users to switch, but didn't see the point at the time... Now I've got Textra installed/set as the default not really sure why I'd change but worth considering if I do :p

Shame about the settings/customisation, seems like that'd be an easy thing to implement as well

Is there no settings backup even in the paid version? Which I'm seriously considering btw, the adds are annoying now :o

unless i'ts a feature they've added very recently then it's def not there. i've the paid version too. i'm on my third 6P this year, and used textra when on my nexus 5, so in the last 13 or so months i've had to do the customisation 4 times. what's even more annoying, you can't customise someones settings until a text has been sent to/from them, so it's not like you can quickly in one session reput the customisation, but instead slowly wait for the 20 or so people to text and then remember to do it.

any one know of an app that will allow reading of music files on the phone when setting notificatoins/phone ring tone etc? atm i've had to download the crappy go sms so that i can then when changing ringtone, select go sms which reads all .mp3 files on the phone and will include these in a list to select from, the default android list only shows the notifications that come with the phone. very annoying. i'd raelly like to remove go sms too.

Seems there is a limited number of 4 months free Google play music vouchers available via the play store. There is a banner to click at the top

On Samsung phones with Marshmallow you can copy a mp3 to either the 'Ringtones' or 'Notifications' folder on the internal storage and it'll then appear in the selection list and you will have the option to allow which part of the mp3 will be used automatically or just choose to start playing from the beginning.

I use Audacity to edit mp3s before putting in the Ringtones folder but admittedly it's a bit overkill to edit using that.

GSam no longer needs root or additional addons to display system deep battery stats. Simply grant it permission via the ADB command it tells you and that's it. Quite nice having in-depth stats in Nougat now.

Hey guys,

Just had my Three bill for the last month and I've been charged for message delivery reports... only £1-something, but still. This is on account on me having them enabled in Textra (paid).

Is this network specific do you think or does it affect all?

I'm on Three too and just checked my bill. £4 over what it should be due to message delivery reports. Wasn't charged for them when I was on EE and I'm not using Textra on my new phone yet. Must be network specific.

Edit: turned "Delivery status" off on My Mi5 so will see if that helps. Closest I can find in MIUI that could be causing it.

Edit2: From the 3 Support page:

Text delivery reports are currently charged at 1.2p per report. These delivery reports confirm whether the text messages that you send are delivered successfully. Learn how to switch delivery reports on or off by visiting our interactive guide and choosing your phone.

Is it possible to gift an app?

I have Google play credit on my account and would like to buy an app for another person. Anyone done this?

How about adding your google account as a payment option, buy the app, then remove your payment option? :)

Not how you would like to gift things but it should work.

Hi

Looking for an app that can play video and cast it to my Chromecast. The video is on a Nas.

I have a plex running but it isn't finding some of the videos for some reason, its only one show that i don't watch that much on the TV so i don't mind casting it from my tab on the odd occasion i do watch it.

So if something could browse a nas and cast it, that would be great.

Any suggestions please?

I have £50 credit on my account that came with the pixel. I'm not using it all in a hurry so wanted to gift some apps.

Not to worry.
