New essential Android apps thread

Not sure why anyone would choose the google keyboard over swiftkey anyway.

For swiping I found Google keyboard to be the best, Swiftkey and Swype felt a little clunky.

Nova Launcher updated with a few N features, and dark/night mode:

Does GOOGLE KB store your predictions and sync over multiple devices?

One of the reasons I like SwiftKey. Never had any real issues with SwiftKey

Some features of Google KB are better than SwiftKey and most others. No keyboard has beaten Swype for one specific feature though, being able to elect all, cut, copy and paste via keyboard buttons or gestures. I wonder why this is? It's such a useful feature.

Just a shame Swype's prediction engine is not up to scratch compared to Google or SwiftKey.

swiftkey is my keyboard of choice and has been for years. i have found a few times when it simply wont load up when it clearly should, or it wont **** off the screen when there's clearly no reason to be there. my biggest issue with it however is the position of the return key. i hit it too often when i actually mean to hit the M key. this results in very incorrect words, though i must admit the predictions are much better now that even without characters it's often enough getting the right word.

i do love the double word predictions swiftkey has. does GK have them? makes repeated messages on pof a breeze.

Tried out swift keyboard and just couldn't get on with it. Have swapped back to the Google keyboard and upgraded it via the link above. Much better :)

Also recently installed Nova launcher and ditched the Google bar and swapped it to a dark theme all over.

All this when I'm a few days away from changing phones...oh well :o

I tend to switch between Google Keyboard and Swiftkey periodically as they start to annoy me. Google's prediction isn't that great and doesn't work for URL/search; when swiping inaccurately Swiftkey misses loads of words that Google always gets.

It's a good thing Google keyboard has dictionary sync and Nova has a export/import function ;).

I don't think the update is in the store yet but there was an APK posted on the last page or 2.

edit: Here you go...

Google Keyboard just had a massive update: http://www.xda-developers.com/googl...-mode-adjustable-height-key-borders-and-more/

Staged rollout but you can grab the APK from here: http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/google-keyboard/google-keyboard-5-0-18-121010836-release/

  • Adjustable height
  • Option to enable long press keys to symbols
  • Add borders to keys
  • One handed mode
  • A few tweaks to gesture typing

edit2: I was looking at swiftkey on the play store and saw it has purchases up to £19.99?? WTF is that all about? :D
