New essential Android apps thread

Well they can stick their themes up their posterior. I'll give it a go because I could do with a dedicated row for numbers. I tried that with the google keyboard but it doesn't work because you have to select PC layout which adds loads of extra keys making everything too small in portrait mode.

Just tried the Google Keyboard after using Swiftkey for years, I'm suitably impressed, it feels much faster than Swiftkey. It'll take a little bit of time to get used to, but I'm liking it so far.

Also, as mentioned in the PC Games section of the forum, Star Wards:KOTOR is free for Android via the Amazon Underground. Downloaded and looking forward to playing it later.

After noticing performance increases since installing Nova on my phone I've done the same to my Nexus 9. Much better! It's been so laggy since marshmallow :(

Gonna go find that star wars game, thanks!

Does Google Keyboard store commonly typed words in the cloud, so things like account names are remembered when I use other devices? That's one of the great things about Swiftkey, alongside the number row and cursor keys.

As far as I can tell yes, it syncs your personal dictionary and all my words have synced over with no issues.

gav: can you post back your conclusion as i'm in the same boat as you and interested to know. i've very briefly tried GK and gone back to swiftkey as my speed is massively reduced when typing, but i suspect a large part is just down to being used to where the keys are, so would be good to see the opinion on from someone who's given it a real good go.

i think actually one of my most missed features would be the swipe left or right on the period key to get question mark.

Can anyone recommend a good uninstaller please? Want to remove a load of Sony bloatware but I also want it to stop it being auto downloaded the next time it connects to the Play store.

Any suggestions?

Thank you!

Have you tried the "Disable" button in the app info screen for the apps in question? That usually works for me. Won't get rid of the base app but does prevent it from starting or being updated.

I'm in the same boat mate! It's all that "What's New" rubbish etc, yeah? As far as I know, and I seem to recall asking on the Sony Talk forums, there's nothing we can do until the phone is rooted... I'd love to be proved wrong now though :p

You can just disable them in the Applications Manager screen. Some baked in apps cannot be removed so just disable them. They won't be automatically updated thereafter in the Play Store.

You need apps like what's new though, updates to core apps like the camera are done via it.

I've not tried disabling. I've not really tried anything! :p

Will disabling them get rid of the icons? They bug me so much! :(

One other thing, when I hit the button to view everything thats open (bottom right) Sony kindly added the icon to close everything which is great...however, it's also got that small bar at the bottom for opening up pop-up like widgets. I want it gone. Is this doable?

I feel like such a noob when it comes to Android. :o - I don't like to fettle much (looking at the phone desktop threads shows how far people go) just set it how I like it from the beginning and leave it at that! Ergo I feel useless when it comes to accomplishing what should be fairly basic! :D

I believe (although it may depend on the model) that any core Xperia apps are now updated either via the Play Store or the system updates section in the settings. That said, they've probably tied it into the What's New app somehow just to be awkward so probably safer to just leave it.

It's stupid stuff like when I open say an image and it says "would you like to use Photos? or sketch? or images? of albums?"

Sod off! Stock apps only please unless I install them! :D

I'll leave whats new alone but there are some pesky ones about to meet their maker...
