New file sharing laws

Do these petitions ever have any impact?

Not criticising, just asking.

I've had the following responses to signing these petitions:

- There is no plan to ban the Red Arrows from the London Olympics.
- There in no plan to ban old cars in Europe.
- And some long waffle saying no to something without aver addressing the issue.

So most of the time these petitions are based on myths, and the rest of the time they are ignored.

ISPs won't be very happy about losing business because of a few mega rich corporations lobbying the government into police state measures.

I have no doubt pirates will find a way around it but the government don't care about piracy, they just want more control.

would it not be easier to block the downlaod sites? trackers require a centralised server..

all they ahve to do is allow the ISP's to block IP's.... much cheaper easier than doing it the other way round...

Nah - I won't be signing.
Two main reasons:

1. They NEVER EVER achieve anything.
2. I actually agree about cutting off thieves from the net.

2. I actually agree about cutting off thieves from the net.

You clearly do not undersand the implications of cutting people off who have not been proven to be copyright infringers.

I should also point out that a 'Thief' has committed the act of theft, a criminal offence whereby somebody is permenantly deprived of thier property.

Copyright infringement is a civil offence and certainly not theft... one wonders what they are teaching kids in school these days...

yea! and if your car gets stolen and mows some elderly lady down who then later dies you should be charged with murder for not having your car secured at all times

As has already been discussed, car ownership implies responsibility for the use of that car up to the point that you can show that someone went beyond reasonable limits of what you could be responsible for i.e. they stole it, etc.

And as has also already been discussed, you don't sign a contract agreeing to keep your car locked at all times.

I'd like to know of any school curriculum in the history of the world that has taught the difference between criminal and civil offences, the definition of copyright infringement, and the definition of theft.

Nah, because - ironically - torrents have legitimate uses and blocking the central server prevents that.

For a grammar Nazi you seem to be lacking in the basics of English lit.

They wont, because "the masses" don't want to pay a single penny for what they download.

For those with reasonable ISPs it is a very attractive option, as yes you pay a small fee, but the DL speed is huge... the constricting thing here is ISPs that strangle people for using a connection that they have already paid for.

ask the site to remove the content, if they dont and dont have a valid reason for not doing to block their IP...

They don't actually host any content, just signposts to where the content is being held (on user's PC's).

Amusingly, many sites actually operate a take down scheme - if the copyright holder contacts them regarding a torrent link that is breaching their copyright, the site will remove it. Of course, due to the nature of torrents, it would be almost impossible for the copyright holders to police these sites effectively - as quickly as they ask for links to be removed, new ones would take their place.
