Hi All,

So after dragging my last build through for what seems like a 100 years, I'm going to bite the bullet and get a new build underway. Currently running a 4790K and a 980ti, so I'm expecting a decent step up, I have 1440p monitor so will continue to use that. If you see any glaring errors below please let me know, I'd like to have the potential to upgrade in the future but in all honesty I probably won't. Thanks

Thanks everyone, happy that I wasn't a million miles off. Couldn't find the rgb artic when I was looking and I will swap the M.2's over. Will check to make sure the PSU will work in the case.

The GPU is a difficult one, the extra VRAM is a consideration for the future really. I'm not too bothered about RT but will look into it. Is there any benefit to having AMD cpu & gpu or is it just going to be RT/VRAM/price decision? Most expensive part, hardest decision

Ok so I just need to decide on the GPU, It's whether 16gb vs 24gb on the VRAM will make a huge issue with longevity for £150 or if I will miss RT some point in the future? Decisions, Decisions. I'm hoping that if I do go with the 4080S, I could still upgrade it in a couple of years if needed. Does everything in the build have a decent chance of running a new card in 3 or 4 yrs? My current system is struggling unsurprisingly but I have had a decent life out of it. I'm hoping the upgrade will be significant and noticeable  Also it would be nice if it was quiet !!

Very, very nice

you can get a windws key for £20 if you google. Forum rules we can't link..think my win 11 pro was £18
I'm unsure on whether I'm going to build it (it's been awhile) or phone OCUK and get them to quote me to build it, I'm guessing they'd have an issue with me going oh by the way here's my windows key lol

I can't say if this will be true for the future, but based on previous cards, the lack of VRAM on the nvidia cards eventually hurts their ray tracing performance to the point that competing AMD cards can end up faster. Though, we're also talking long enough in the future that those games are nearly unplayable at the highest settings anyway.
I'm hoping that the 16gb will last me long enough at 1440p till I need to upgrade the card in 4yrs time. I'd like to the CPU will still be good then but who knows. I do tend to wait far too long

I think I am going with the 4080 S now, I'm just seeing if I can get a quiet one, or if the Zotac one will be quiet enough, the joys of noise level reviews !!

I am going to go with the 4080S, hopefully by the time the vram is an issue I'll be able to upgrade for around the same money, at worse it will be a cpu & gpu. Just waiting for OC to get back to me, typically it looks like the cooler is OOS so might have to go with the one with no rgb which is no biggie really.

Well 3 things now out of stock and OC have a large queue of mails, phoned up on Monday to make sure they got my mail and they said it would be in the next day or two to get back to me. Hopefully they'll get some more stock in soon. Was hoping to get it sorted by bank holiday weekend but I think it will be after that now. Once you decide to pull the trigger its a pain when it jams !!

it'll come quickly I'm sure. will be a beast of a rig, now I've had another look. Only change I'd make is get the rgb version of the g skill trident ram, seeing as you've got rgb case, aio cooler and rgb on the gpu. £8.99 more. you know it'll make your pc run faster  .

Ok you twisted my arm, new ram in the bag, going to be rented out to rave's at this rate !!

Any thoughts on the motherboard? I've been reading that Asus boards can be a bit debatable, but the internet is a nightmare. Do like the specs of it and struggling to find one with the same specs for around the same money

Well all ordered now after having to change the psu as it as the SHIFT would have struggled in the case and then the replacement due to stock issues and 2tb m2 to stock issues, oh and me nearly changing my mind back to the xtx.

Should be ready when I'm back off my holiday. Thanks for all the help

I can't seem to get it to run EXPO which is a shame. Struggling to find a solution via the Web, where is the best place for a novice to ask?

When I set it to expo it boots into safe mode, so I set it back to auto and it's back to being fine. Ram is running at 4800 (I think) I'm going to try expo II today or tomorrow and see if that works. I haven't done anything to the CPU so I'm not sure if I need to do something with that first. I'm also struggling to find what timings it's running at in AMD Master, looks like CL (40) -tRCD (40) -tRP (can't find) -tRAS (RAD Active time ?) (77) -CMD . I am horribly out of my depth with this stuff as I never buggered about with RAM before, I was hoping it would run out of the box.

Try a single stick of memory and see if you can enable expo.

Download memtest and run to see if you have a faulty stick.
Im getting a usb stick delivered tomorrow to update the bios, expo 1 & expo 2 don't work. Ran memtest64 but it wouldn't let me allocate all the memory, the memory it did allocate didn't have any issues. Will update the bios and see if that works, then will try taking the sticks out and testing single ones but that bothers me a bit being a new machine. Timespy score is 24k but im guessing ram plays no part in that

Well I thought the above thing had worked after black screen and then safe mode, started from exiting. Booted up fine, ram running at 6000mhz. Restarted and now black screen and can't get into safe mode on bios, tried the turning it on and off 3 times and nothing PC on but just black screen. Proper stuck

Maybe reset the CMOS on the motherboard, power off and take out the battery and short pins clear cmos.

Page 28 of the manual
Thanks Micky, it's got me back to the original settings it shipped with. No yellow light on the MB now that it had the black screen. At least I know how to get back to this state now. I think the list of steps on the previous page almost worked, as when I got into safe mode after changing them and exited without changing anything it went to windows and the ram was running at 6000mhz but then when I tried to restart it wouldn't. Tempted to try and manually set the timings rather than try the expo and the changes, but I also think contacting ocuk is probably the best idea. If only the ram worked out of the box !!!
