Hi guys.

This is in the VTEC thread but I thought it may get a few more responses if it had its own thread.

I recently picked up a DC5 gearbox to put on my EP3. The gearboxes are nearly identical but the DC5 box has different 4/5/6 gear ratios as well as an LSD.

DC5 box went on like a dream, car is working fine. all the gears are fine. the diff is working like they should.

however, there is a loud, clicking sound coming from the gearbox when rolling backwards [does it in reverse and neutral] but only going backwards.
doesnt happen at a specific part of the rotation and is totally random.

the lads who fitted it think it could be bearings. i haven't got a clue.

i have emailed the guy i got the box off. which i am positive will result in a nice short "it was fine when I had it m8" sort of response.

sigh.

its not the end of the world because the car is working fine and it sticks to corners like poo on fur now. but I really could have done without another potential bill and the hassle of an annoying noise to contend with.

Any input from the likes of Fuzz etc would be appreciated.

Cheers

Rich

Zero noise when the wheels are rotating forwards. Both wheels spin backwards individually jacking up each side in turn. The clicking happens when spinning each wheel in turn.

Any effect by pushing clutch in and out?

Could be the LSD as some to make obscure sounds, think GT3 or a bearing.

The individual wheels should be stiff to turn individually if the other side is on the ground!
Currently sounding like a diff pin is broken but don't know the type of diff well enough really

Its the standard dc5 lsd in this box isn't it? Helical/geared diff I believe....

It's a torque biasing diff, no plates or viscous couplings. Unlikely to click in one direction only IMO, but possible I suppose.

A broken/chipped tooth on the reverse gear could cause the noise.

You might be able to pull the speed sensor out and shove an endoscope in there for a look if it's in a suitable position?
Or the drain/fill plug

Sounds like the LSD, think a lot do that in reverse especially with some slight steering lock on.

wheels are stiff when rotating them backwards but free when spinning forwards.

the diff is a standard honda OEM diff. the box is from an integra DC5. only difference are the gearbox mounts, 4/5/6 gears and the differential.

this happens with lock on or with the wheels pointing forward and no lock applied.

its not the gears from what i can tell, it happens with the car in neutral and rolling backwards downhill.

im uploading a video now, will be speaking to a few specialists today to see what my options are.
at the moment i have the option of spending more money or spending more money.

Some cars with LSD just make that noise anyway? Maybe not as loud by i am sure some clicking in reverse is normal.

Maybe just showing a bit of wear n tear given its a used box out of a DC5 that as no doubt been thrashed most of its life.

this was my thinking. with it being a honda OEM part, i was sceptical that it would be normal. I doubt honda would have launched a car with this sort of noise coming from it from the factory.

spoke to a few gearbox specialists today, waiting for them to get back to me.

LOL

well, we have a solution guys

spoken to Stevie at 8Speed today

he has informed me that he did a similar swap for a customer.

the DC5 and EP3 speed sensors are different as the gearing is different.

thats whats causing the click.

currently on the phone bent over with my pants down waiting to hear their astronomical fantasy price for the part i need :o
